Major Order: BAE Systems to Power Quebec’s Record-Breaking Battery-Electric Bus Fleet

(IN BRIEF) BAE Systems has secured a significant contract to power the largest battery-electric bus fleet in North America. The Association du Transport Urbain du Quebec (ATUQ), representing ten transit authorities in Quebec, has placed an order for up to 1,229 battery-electric buses equipped with BAE Systems’ Gen3 electric drive system. BAE Systems will collaborate with Nova Bus to integrate their electric drive systems into the buses. This order reinforces BAE Systems’ position as a leader in heavy-duty electric propulsion. The Gen3 system incorporates advanced technology for improved heat management, lightweight components, and increased electrical efficiency. With over 25 years of experience, BAE Systems has a proven track record in delivering electric propulsion solutions, and its technology is already powering 1,800 buses in Quebec.

(PRESS RELEASE) FARNBOROUGH, 7-Jun-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — BAE Systems (LON: BA), a British multinational defence, security, and aerospace company, has been chosen to supply its Gen3 electric drive systems for the Association du Transport Urbain du Quebec’s (ATUQ) order of up to 1,229 battery-electric buses. This landmark order, the largest of its kind in North America, will enable emission-free transportation across Quebec’s major urban centers.

Under the agreement, BAE Systems will collaborate with Nova Bus to integrate their electric drive systems into the buses. This order builds upon BAE Systems’ proven track record, with their technology already powering 1,800 buses in the province.

ATUQ represents ten transit authorities responsible for 99% of public transportation trips in Quebec, including Montreal, Quebec City, and other major metropolitan areas. By utilizing BAE Systems’ Gen3 electric drive system, these transit authorities will be able to achieve clean and efficient operation for their electric bus fleets.

“We are proud to advance the transition to zero-emission public transportation in Quebec,” said Bob Lamanna, vice president and general manager of Power & Propulsion Solutions at BAE Systems. “This order marks the next step toward full fleet electrification – delivering reliable, high-performance systems to help ATUQ’s members reach their environmental goals.”

The Gen3 system, BAE Systems’ latest innovation, incorporates advanced power electronics and an electric motor, ensuring a sustainable mode of transportation. Leveraging cutting-edge technology, such as silicon carbide for improved heat management, lightweight components, and enhanced electrical efficiency, the system optimizes vehicle performance. Its flexible design minimizes connections, resulting in a compact system that enables longer distances to be covered on a single charge.

“This order represents our collective commitment to improving air quality, meeting the provincial government ambitious targets and contributing to Canada’s zero-emission future,” said Marc-Andre Varin, general manager of ATUQ. “BAE Systems has been with us from the beginning of our journey, starting with electric-hybrids and now the switch to all-electric buses. This is a big leap forward in our plans to provide sustainable transit service.”

With over 25 years of expertise, BAE Systems has installed more than 16,000 propulsion systems in transit buses worldwide. The company’s electric propulsion technology is developed and serviced at its facilities in Endicott, New York, and Rochester, UK, showcasing its commitment to innovation and sustainability in the transportation sector.
