Dispatch, Eneco Collaborate on Groundbreaking Battery Energy Storage System for Renewable Energy in Dordrecht, Netherlands

(IN BRIEF) Dutch battery developer Dispatch is embarking on a groundbreaking project to construct the Netherlands’ largest stand-alone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Dordrecht. This 45MW/90MWh utility-scale BESS aims to store surplus energy from renewable sources for grid stabilization, with Eneco overseeing optimization across multiple power markets. The project, facilitated by partnerships with EPICo², Macquarie Capital, and ABN Amro, underscores the crucial role of battery storage in advancing the energy transition.

(PRESS RELEASE) ROTTERDAM, 12-Jun-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — In a pioneering move towards grid stabilization and renewable energy optimization, Dutch battery developer Dispatch is set to build the Netherlands’ largest stand-alone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Dordrecht’s port area. This groundbreaking 45MW/90MWh utility-scale BESS will span a 6000m² site, aimed at storing excess energy from renewable sources for grid stabilization purposes. Eneco will oversee battery optimization across multiple power markets, with construction slated to commence in the near future through a partnership with infrastructure fund EPICo², Macquarie Capital, and lender ABN Amro.

Battery Storage: Empowering the Energy Transition

As renewable energy continues to evolve, the role of battery storage technology becomes increasingly pivotal in balancing electricity grid supply and demand. BESS systems like the one envisioned by Dispatch store energy generated from sources such as solar and wind, releasing it during peak demand or low production periods, ensuring a consistent and reliable energy supply.

The proposed battery, comprising 144 Fluence cubes with a capacity of 90MWh, is projected to store energy equivalent to the daily needs of approximately 21,500 households. This capacity will significantly enhance grid stability, mitigate blackout risks, and optimize the utilization of wind and solar energy. Equans Netherlands will oversee the engineering and construction aspects of the battery storage system, while Eneco will leverage optimization strategies to maintain grid balance without exacerbating local congestion.
