WACKER Introduces New Silicone Rubber for Generator Protection at CWIEME 2025

ELASTOSIL® N 9189, a conductive silicone rubber, is ideal for use in power plant generators, optimizing electrical field distribution and preventing operational damage. ELASTOSIL® N 2076, a self-leveling and flame-retardant silicone, provides durable protection for electric coils in a variety of applications. The company’s latest product, ELASTOSIL® N 9189, is a highly conductive silicone rubber designed for use in large power plant generators, protecting against operational failures by optimizing electrical field distribution in stators. In addition, WACKER is highlighting its ELASTOSIL® N 2076, a flame-retardant and self-leveling silicone rubber that offers excellent protection for electric coils.

ELASTOSIL® N 9189: Protecting Generators with Advanced Electrical Conductivity

The new silicone rubber ELASTOSIL® N 9189 has been developed specifically to prevent operational damage in power plant generators. WACKER will debut this product at CWIEME 2025. This one-component RTV-1 silicone rubber is non-sag and becomes free-flowing under shear force, offering significant processing advantages. It is tin-free and cures at room temperature when exposed to atmospheric humidity, releasing only alcohol during the curing process. With medium Shore hardness and the ability to withstand temperatures up to 230 °C, ELASTOSIL® N 9189 ensures both durability and high performance.

A key feature of ELASTOSIL® N 9189 is its electrical conductivity. The product boasts a specific volume resistivity of 10 ohm-centimeters, which means it conducts electrical currents better than seawater and similarly to a 10-percent saline solution. This enables efficient dissipation of electrical charges from the surface of materials, making it ideal for use in large power plant generators. Specifically, the product helps optimize the electrical field and potential distribution around stator windings, preventing corona discharges that could damage the primary insulation of copper bars over time. By bonding copper bars at the slot exits of stators, ELASTOSIL® N 9189 plays a crucial role in ensuring generator reliability and longevity.

ELASTOSIL® N 9189 offers processing advantages, especially in terms of occupational health and safety, due to its tin-free formulation. This new product surpasses its predecessor, ELASTOSIL® N 189, in electrical conductivity and mechanical properties, making it a superior choice for generator manufacturers.

ELASTOSIL® N 2076: Self-Leveling and Flame-Retardant Silicone for Electric Coils

WACKER’s ELASTOSIL® N 2076 is another standout at this year’s CWIEME. This silicone rubber, also a one-component RTV-1 grade, is formulated for coating applications on electric coils. ELASTOSIL® N 2076 is particularly advantageous for coating choke coils, transformer coils, and end windings of small drive motors, offering self-leveling properties that make it easy to apply by dipping. Once cured, the product is resistant to weathering, UV, and heat, and it provides effective electrical insulation for electric coils, shielding them from moisture, dirt, and other environmental factors.

In addition to its self-leveling capabilities, ELASTOSIL® N 2076 is flame-retardant, meeting the stringent requirements of European standard EN 45545-2 for fire safety in rail vehicles. This makes it a highly versatile product suitable for a variety of electrical applications, including those in industries where fire safety is critical.
