TotalEnergies and Partners Enter Offshore Block 8 Exploration Permit in Lebanon

(IN BRIEF) TotalEnergies, together with partners Eni and QatarEnergy, has signed an agreement with the Lebanese government to enter the offshore Block 8 exploration permit. Operated by TotalEnergies, the consortium will launch an initial work program that includes a 1,200 km² 3D seismic survey to further evaluate the block’s exploration potential. Despite earlier drilling results on Block 9, the partners have reaffirmed their commitment to offshore exploration in Lebanon and to working closely with national authorities.

(PRESS RELEASE) PARIS, 10-Jan-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — TotalEnergies, acting as operator with a 35% interest, together with its partners Eni (35%) and QatarEnergy (30%), has signed an agreement with the Lebanese government to enter the exploration permit for Block 8 offshore Lebanon. The move marks the next phase of the consortium’s exploration strategy in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Under the terms of the agreement, the partners will begin an initial work program focused on acquiring new subsurface data to better evaluate the area’s hydrocarbon potential. The program includes the acquisition of a 1,200 square kilometer three-dimensional seismic survey across Block 8, which will provide high-resolution imaging to support further geological and technical assessments.

The decision to move forward with Block 8 follows earlier exploration activity in Lebanese waters. While drilling results from the Qana well on Block 9 did not meet expectations, the consortium has reiterated its long-term commitment to exploration activities in Lebanon and to continued collaboration with national authorities.

Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TotalEnergies, said that despite the outcome of the Block 9 well, the company and its partners remain engaged in pursuing exploration opportunities offshore Lebanon. He noted that efforts will now be concentrated on Block 8, in close cooperation with Eni, QatarEnergy, and the Lebanese authorities, as part of a continued strategy to assess the country’s offshore energy potential.

By advancing exploration on Block 8, the consortium aims to build a more comprehensive understanding of the geological prospects offshore Lebanon, while maintaining a collaborative approach with the host country and its institutions.
