Telefónica and Vithas Secure Quantum-Safe Communications for Healthcare with Cutting-Edge Technology

(IN BRIEF) Telefónica, in collaboration with Vithas, LuxQuanta, and QoolNet, has successfully implemented a Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) system to protect healthcare data transmitted between two hospitals in Madrid. This project marks a significant step toward ensuring the security of sensitive patient information in the face of emerging quantum computing threats. Telefónica will present this groundbreaking solution at the Mobile World Congress in March 2025.

(PRESS RELEASE) MADRID, 18-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Telefónica, together with Vithas, LuxQuanta, and QoolNet, has successfully connected two hospitals in Madrid using a quantum fiber-optic network designed to secure sensitive healthcare communications. The project demonstrates the viability of Quantum-Safe technologies in safeguarding confidential patient data, such as medical records, from potential future attacks by quantum computers.

The collaboration aims to address the growing need for robust cybersecurity as quantum computing technology advances. While quantum computing promises revolutionary progress in fields like medicine and scientific research, it also presents significant risks to current encryption methods, which could be vulnerable to quantum-powered attacks. Telefónica’s initiative tackles these risks head-on by implementing Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), which is grounded in the fundamental principles of quantum physics, offering far stronger security than traditional cryptographic methods.

Telefónica has leveraged its extensive fiber infrastructure in Madrid, deploying the quantum link between the Vithas Madrid Arturo Soria University Hospital and the Vithas Madrid La Milagrosa University Hospital. The system includes the NOVA LQ® QKD equipment from LuxQuanta, which generates quantum signals through the fiber, and Quantum-Safe solution technology from QoolNet-UPM, which ensures the secure transmission of quantum keys. The data is encrypted end-to-end using Fortinet’s next-generation firewalls, guaranteeing that sensitive medical communications, such as teleconsultations and remote monitoring, remain private and protected.

The success of this project highlights the critical role of quantum technologies in the healthcare sector, where safeguarding personal patient data is paramount. According to Leonor Ostos, Innovation Manager at Telefónica España, “We’ve successfully tested quantum key distribution in the healthcare sector, creating a secure channel for sensitive data and preemptively addressing future technological threats.”

Ángel Ayuso, Managing Director of Fundación Vithas, expressed his satisfaction with the project, saying, “The security of patient information is vital, and our collaboration with Telefónica and other partners ensures that this information will remain secure, now and in the future.”

This pioneering project will be showcased at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, where Telefónica will highlight its advancements in quantum technologies. A special session, titled “Quantum-Safe Technologies for Communications,” will provide more insights into this initiative and its real-world applications.
