Stora Enso and Lindab Achieve Up to 72 Percent Packaging CO₂ Reduction with Reusable Corrugated Boxes

(IN BRIEF) Stora Enso teamed up with Lindab to design a ten-use, tape-free reusable corrugated box that reduced packaging CO₂ by 72 percent on Polish-to-Czech deliveries and 61 percent on routes to Sweden. Our lightweight FEFCO 201 redesign secures without tape, folds flat for returns, and complies with EU standards. Life-cycle analysis revealed a 12 percent cut in packaging emissions compared to single-use cartons. This collaboration highlights Stora Enso’s expertise in sustainable packaging innovation.

(PRESS RELEASE) HELSINKI, 1-Jul-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Stora Enso is proud to unveil its collaboration with Lindab to revolutionize corrugated packaging through a reusable-box system that dramatically lowers carbon emissions. By leveraging our expertise in sustainable materials and design, we conducted a comprehensive life-cycle assessment comparing traditional single-use cartons—each sealed with tape—to a purpose-built, ten-cycle reusable FEFCO 201 box made entirely from recycled board.

Our analysis demonstrated that, even when factoring in return-logistics emissions, Lindab’s switch to our reusable solution cuts packaging-related CO₂ by 72 percent on routes from Poland to the Czech Republic and by 61 percent on the longer haul to Sweden. Key to this performance is our lightweight, tape-free closure design, which secures the box without additional materials and collapses flat for efficient return.

“Partnering with Lindab allowed us to apply Stora Enso’s packaging innovation and sustainability expertise to real-world logistics,” says Robert Jarmoliński, Graphic Constructor at Stora Enso’s Corrugated Łódź Plant. “Through several design iterations, we merged two proven standard formats into one reusable box that meets EU packaging directives, folds flat for transport, and withstands nine returns before end-of-life. The result is a robust solution that slashes material use and emissions without sacrificing functionality.”

Michał Wróblewski, Operations Director at Lindab Sp. z o.o., adds: “Stora Enso’s detailed carbon-footprint comparison highlighted a 12 percent reduction in packaging emissions alone. This project underscores how a fully optimized distribution process—right down to the box—can substantially diminish environmental impact while preserving service excellence.”

This initiative exemplifies Stora Enso’s commitment to co-creating sustainable packaging solutions that fulfill both regulatory requirements and corporate climate goals.
