RED ELÉCTRICA DE ESPAÑA: Demand for electrical energy falls 5.5% in February

More than 45% of this month’s generation came from renewable sources

4-3-2013 — /europawire.eu/ — The demand for electrical energy on the Spanish peninsula in February, after having factored in the seasonal and working patterns, dropped 5.5% with respect to the same month last year. Gross demand was 20,496 GWh, 10.9% lower than in the same month of 2012 and this is due to the temperatures being milder than last year and the fact that February had fewer days than in 2012 which was a leap year.

In the first two months of the year, and after having factored in the seasonal and working patterns, consumption was 4.8% below that registered last year. The demand for electrical energy in this period was 43,023 GWh, 6.7% less than the same period in 2012.

New wind power records
On 6 February, wind power production reached a new record for instantaneous power with 17,056 MW at 3:49 pm, a 2.5% increase compared to the previous recorded of 18 April 2012 with 16,636 MW.

The record for hourly energy was also set at 16,918 MWh on the same day between 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm, representing an increase of 2.8% on the previous record of 16,455 MWh, also registered on 18 April 2012.

Wind power production for the month reached 5,376 GWh, 7.2% higher than the same period last year, and represented 25.1% of total production.

Similarly, generation from renewable energy sources represented 46.8%, almost 17 points higher than in the same period last year.

65.3% of electricity generation during the month was obtained using technologies which produce zero CO2 emissions.
