Papendal and Eneco eMobility Strengthen Sustainable Sports Infrastructure with Major EV Charging Plaza Expansion

(IN BRIEF) Papendal and Eneco eMobility have opened a charging plaza with 59 new EV charging stations at the Papendal Olympic Training Centre, supporting athletes, employees, and visitors in making the switch to electric mobility. Developed and operated by Eneco eMobility, the infrastructure requires no capital investment from Papendal and is largely powered by on-site solar energy. As part of a broader energy management strategy that includes thermal storage and future battery systems, the project strengthens Papendal’s sustainability efforts within its Natura 2000 environment while aligning high-performance sports with energy efficiency.

(PRESS RELEASE) ROTTERDAM, 16-Jan-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Papendal and Eneco eMobility have expanded their joint sustainability initiative with the commissioning of 59 new electric vehicle charging stations, creating a large charging plaza at the Papendal Olympic Training Centre. The new infrastructure supports athletes, visitors, and employees by enabling convenient charging while reinforcing the site’s long-term commitment to sustainable mobility.

Herman Keijsers, CCO of Eneco eMobility, and Jochem Schellens, director Sportcentrum Papendal.

Located within a Natura 2000 protected area, Papendal places strong emphasis on reducing its environmental footprint and improving energy efficiency across its operations. The addition of the charging plaza represents another milestone in the close strategic partnership between Papendal and Eneco, which focuses on the continuous optimization of the site’s integrated energy management system.

Eneco eMobility was responsible for the development of the charging plaza and will continue to operate it. This model allows Papendal to benefit from the infrastructure without the need for upfront capital investment. Approximately 150 TeamNL athletes and employees who drive electric vehicles can now charge their cars directly on site, making sustainable transport a practical and accessible option in their daily routines.

A significant portion of the electricity used at the charging plaza is generated by Papendal’s own solar panels, ensuring that locally produced renewable energy is utilized as efficiently as possible. This approach strengthens energy self-sufficiency and reduces reliance on external power sources.

The charging plaza forms part of a broader energy strategy at Papendal. In addition to solar power, the site already operates a thermal energy storage system as part of its energy management setup. A large battery system combined with smart energy management technology is planned for a later phase, further increasing efficiency and flexibility. Together, these measures are steadily transforming Papendal into a model location where elite sports and sustainability go hand in hand.
