Outokumpu, Alfa Laval and SSAB Unite for Ultra-Low Emission Cooling at Helsinki Hospital

(IN BRIEF) Outokumpu has partnered with Alfa Laval and SSAB to provide cutting-edge plate heat exchangers for the Laakso Joint Hospital project in Helsinki. As part of a major redevelopment effort led by the City of Helsinki and Helsinki University Hospital, the project targets an energy-efficient, low-emission cooling system with up to 60 percent lower carbon footprint. The heat exchangers feature Outokumpu’s innovative Circle Green® stainless steel and SSAB’s Zero™ steel, significantly reducing carbon emissions and reinforcing the importance of sustainable materials in modern infrastructure. The installation of five units in 2025 is expected to yield operational savings and decrease emissions in the upstream value chain. The initiative underscores the critical role of cross-industry collaborations in meeting decarbonization goals and highlights the rising global demand for green steel as part of the broader push toward renewable energy, hydrogen, and sustainable urbanization.

(PRESS RELEASE) HELSINKI, 31-Mar-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Outokumpu, recognized globally as a leader in sustainable stainless steel, has joined forces with Alfa Laval and SSAB to supply innovative plate heat exchangers for the Laakso Joint Hospital project in Helsinki, Finland. The project, part of the broader redevelopment of the Laakso Hospital area by the City of Helsinki and Helsinki University Hospital (HUS) by 2030, is seeking an energy-efficient, low-emission cooling solution that can deliver up to 60 percent lower product carbon footprint*.

This partnership leverages the unique capabilities of each company. Outokumpu’s Circle Green® stainless steel and SSAB’s Zero™ steel are key components in the new heat exchangers, which are designed to dramatically reduce carbon emissions. Alfa Laval’s equipment, incorporating these advanced materials, not only meets the stringent energy and emissions criteria but also demonstrates the power of cross-industry collaboration in driving the green transition.

Rolf Schencking, President for Business Line Advanced Materials at Outokumpu, emphasized the growing demand for green steel, noting that low-emission solutions such as renewable energy, hydrogen, and sustainable urbanization are critical to future progress. “Decarbonization is no longer just an ambition—it is an imperative,” he stated, adding that partnerships with forward-thinking Nordic companies like Alfa Laval and SSAB are essential for advancing energy-efficient and low-emission technologies.

The installation of five of Alfa Laval’s plate heat exchangers at Laakso Joint Hospital in 2025 is set to produce significant operational savings and reduce emissions across the upstream value chain. Julien Gennetier, Vice President Energy Division at Alfa Laval, remarked that this collaboration exemplifies how local initiatives can drive global change by scaling the use of low-emission materials.

Circle Green® marks a groundbreaking innovation with a carbon footprint up to 93% lower than the global industry average**, accompanied by a product-specific footprint calculation for each delivery. Today, more than 40 leading companies across Europe and Asia are utilizing this solution to mitigate their carbon impact.

Schencking further explained, “We have drastically reduced the carbon footprint of our stainless steel by utilizing renewable energy sources, low-emission raw materials, and optimizing our production processes. Given stainless steel’s crucial properties—corrosion resistance, strength, durability, and excellent heat transfer—it is the ideal material for the plate heat exchangers at Laakso Joint Hospital. Our partnership with suppliers, customers, and other industry stakeholders enables us to innovate continuously, optimize our supply chains, and collectively achieve better environmental outcomes.”
