Orano Unveils New 30B-10 Cylinders for Transporting Low Enriched Uranium Plus (LEU+) at WNSC Symposium

(IN BRIEF) Orano announced the launch of serial production of the 30B-10 cylinders at the World Nuclear Supply Chain (WNSC) symposium in Warsaw, designed to transport Low Enriched Uranium Plus (LEU+) enriched up to 10%. The new DN30-X package, which combines the DN30 overpack with the 30B-10 cylinder, integrates a criticality control system for transport safety. The DN30-X package was licensed by the U.S. NRC in March 2023, with licensing in France still in progress. This innovation is aimed at addressing future transportation needs for Small Modular Reactors and evolving fuel designs requiring transportation of uranium enriched to up to 20%.

(PRESS RELEASE) SEINE, 21-May-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — At the World Nuclear Supply Chain (WNSC) symposium held on May 20-21, 2025, in Warsaw, Poland, Orano proudly unveiled the launch of serial production for the 30B-10 cylinders, designed to transport Low Enriched Uranium Plus (LEU+), a form of uranium hexafluoride enriched up to 10%. These cylinders are part of the innovative DN30-X package, an advanced solution to meet the evolving needs of the nuclear industry.

In response to the upcoming fuel designs and the growing market for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), there is a need for new transportation solutions for uranium enriched up to 20%, as such options are not currently available in the market. The DN30-X package is Orano’s answer to this challenge, combining the existing DN30 overpack with the newly developed 30B-10 cylinder, which features an integrated criticality control system for enhanced safety. This system includes control rods with neutrophilic characteristics, ensuring the safe transport of uranium.

In March 2023, the DN30-X package was officially licensed by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and the licensing process in France is currently underway.
