NKT Secures Long-Term Solar Electricity Supply from Uniper to Support German Production Sites

(IN BRIEF) Uniper and NKT have signed a ten-year physical Power Purchase Agreement under which NKT will purchase 100% of the renewable electricity and associated Guarantees of Origin from Uniper’s new 17.2 MWp Voslapper Groden solar park in Wilhelmshaven, supporting NKT’s production sites in Nordenham and Cologne. The agreement, targeting commercial operation by 31 January 2027, represents a significant step in both companies’ decarbonization strategies, replacing fossil-based power with locally produced solar energy and demonstrating a credible long-term commitment to renewable sourcing. Senior executives from NKT and Uniper highlighted the role of PPAs in providing price stability, accelerating the energy transition, and enabling regional renewable projects to directly support industrial decarbonization. The project also symbolizes the transformation of a former coal site into a clean energy asset, contributing to Germany’s broader sustainability goals.

(PRESS RELEASE) DÜSSELDORF, 5-Feb-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Uniper and NKT have entered into a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) that will see NKT supplied with renewable electricity from a newly developed solar installation in Wilhelmshaven, Germany. The ten-year physical agreement underscores both companies’ efforts to decarbonize their operations and strengthen the use of locally generated clean energy within German industry.

The electricity will be sourced from Uniper’s Voslapper Groden solar park, which has been constructed on the former ash landfill of a decommissioned coal-fired power plant. With an installed capacity of 17.2 MWp, the facility is expected to produce approximately 17,872 MWh of renewable electricity annually. Under the terms of the PPA, NKT will receive the full forecasted output of the plant as well as all associated Guarantees of Origin, ensuring full traceability of the renewable energy supply.

The solar power will primarily support NKT’s manufacturing operations in Nordenham, located close to the Wilhelmshaven site, as well as its production facilities in Cologne. By sourcing electricity from a nearby renewable asset, NKT is strengthening the regional integration of its energy supply while reducing reliance on fossil-based power.

Michael C. Hjorth, Chief Commercial Officer at NKT, emphasized that the agreement represents a logical progression in the company’s broader decarbonization strategy. He noted that direct procurement of renewable electricity through a physical PPA not only reduces environmental impact but also responds to growing expectations from customers and partners for credible, long-term commitments to sustainable energy sourcing. He added that such agreements are increasingly recognized as a reliable mechanism for demonstrating measurable progress in supply chain decarbonization.

Iulia Tica, CEO of Uniper Renewables, highlighted the symbolic and practical significance of the project, stating that the transformation of a former coal site into a solar park illustrates how regional renewable generation can actively support industrial decarbonization. She welcomed the opportunity to supply NKT with clean energy from a site that represents a tangible shift toward a more sustainable energy system.

Andreas Gemballa, Chief Commercial Officer of Uniper Energy Sales, pointed out that Power Purchase Agreements provide industrial partners with long-term price visibility and secure access to renewable electricity. He stressed that such arrangements create stability for businesses while accelerating the broader energy transition.

The parties have agreed on a Target Commercial Operation Date of 31 January 2027, although initial commissioning activities may commence earlier should the facility become operational ahead of schedule.
