(PRESS RELEASE) VANTAA, 18-Feb-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Vaisala, a global leader in measurement instruments and environmental intelligence for climate action, has marked a significant milestone in its US growth strategy with the opening of a new Xweather office in Gaithersburg, Maryland, located near Washington, D.C. The facility strengthens the company’s long-term presence in the United States and reinforces its commitment to delivering advanced weather and environmental intelligence to both commercial enterprises and government customers.

The Maryland office will serve as a central hub for Xweather employees working across sales, operations, software development, engineering, and leadership functions. Designed with capacity for further expansion, the site complements existing US locations in Boulder, Boston, Charleston, and Minneapolis, while playing a strategic role in software research and development as well as customer engagement activities.

Samuli Hänninen, Executive Vice President at Vaisala, highlighted the longstanding importance of the United States to the company’s history and performance, noting that approximately one third of its revenue is generated in the US. He described the new Maryland office as a logical next step in expanding investment in meteorology, scientific research, and artificial intelligence in the capital region.

The opening ceremony brought together a number of notable guests, including Leena-Kaisa Mikkola, Ambassador of Finland to the United States, and Jud Ashman, Mayor of Gaithersburg. Representatives from the Maryland Department of Commerce and Montgomery County also attended, recognizing the role of the new office in strengthening the state’s technology and data ecosystem. In honor of the occasion, the Mayor declared February 10 “Vaisala Day,” acknowledging the company’s contribution to the local community and the broader weather and climate sector.

Since its launch more than three years ago, Xweather has expanded rapidly, tripling its revenue through a combination of organic growth and acquisitions. Today, the business supports more than 40 percent of Fortune 100 companies, providing high-quality meteorological data and AI-powered insights that help organizations manage weather risk, optimize operations, and enhance resilience.

Several team members at the Gaithersburg site joined through the acquisition of Maxar’s weather-related business and had been working remotely in recent years. The new office now provides a dedicated space for collaboration within the Washington metropolitan area. Travis Hartman, General Manager of Weathercore, noted that bringing teams together in a shared environment strengthens innovation and teamwork.

The Maryland expansion reflects Xweather’s broader philosophy of prioritizing people, product, and business growth. By combining meteorological expertise with advanced AI capabilities, the Gaithersburg office is positioned to support customers in transforming environmental intelligence into practical decisions that promote safety, operational continuity, and long-term resilience.
