(PRESS RELEASE) MADRID, 21-Jan-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — MAPFRE is further solidifying its strategic position in the asset management sector with the appointment of Alberto Matellán as the new general manager of La Financière Responsable (LFR). Matellán, who currently serves as the chief economist at MAPFRE Inversión, will be responsible for leading the execution of LFR’s new Strategic Plan 2025-2027, which emphasizes expanding the company’s international reach.

The MAPFRE Group, which increased its stake in LFR to 51% in February 2023, is also restructuring the company’s senior management. In addition to Matellán’s appointment, Thierry Chesneau will step into the role of president of LFR following Olivier Johanet’s retirement.

Matellán will focus on driving LFR’s growth through the implementation of its Strategic Plan, which aims to enhance the firm’s global presence and improve service delivery. The plan will leverage LFR’s expertise in investment and analysis, built on a proprietary methodology that integrates social and financial dimensions, distinguishing it in the industry.

LFR is among a select group of European fund managers to hold the prestigious SRI (Socially Responsible Investment) label from the French Ministry of the Economy and Finance. All of LFR’s funds are classified as Article 9 under the EU’s SFDR (Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation), indicating their commitment to social impact. With this specialization, LFR complements MAPFRE’s broader investment capabilities, allowing the Group to offer a diverse range of investment and savings solutions to its clients.

Juan Bernal, MAPFRE’s group chief investment officer, emphasized the importance of the new management structure at LFR: “This strategic reorganization highlights our commitment to responsible investment. By aligning our teams more effectively, we aim to maximize the potential of our investment approach, incorporating our unique methodology to identify the best ESG opportunities and possibly launching new impact funds in the future.”

Alberto Matellán expressed his excitement about the new role, stating, “Joining the MAPFRE Group allows us to expand and bring LFR’s unique blend of financial and social analysis to a broader audience. Our investment philosophy, which emphasizes both financial returns and social impact, is a perfect fit for MAPFRE’s long-standing culture, and I am confident it will create new opportunities in the market.”

Matellán, who has been with MAPFRE since 2016, brings over 25 years of experience in the financial markets, having worked for several international companies. He holds a cum laude doctorate in Social Innovation Economics and completed an executive development program at IESE Business School. Matellán, a member of the Spanish Institute of Analysts, has been based in Paris since 2022, where he has been instrumental in integrating LFR’s sustainable investment strategies into MAPFRE’s global offerings.

This appointment marks another significant step in MAPFRE’s internationalization strategy in the asset management sector, with a particular focus on ESG and impact investing. Since 2017, MAPFRE and LFR have jointly launched several sustainable funds, including the MAPFRE AM Capital Responsible Fund and the MAPFRE AM Inclusión Responsible Fund.
