Lindner’s Sustainable Design Shines in Scandinavia’s Largest Wooden Structure, ‘World of Volvo

(IN BRIEF) The “World of Volvo,” Scandinavia’s largest wooden building, has been completed in Gothenburg, showcasing Lindner Scandinavia’s expertise in sustainable construction. The project, which features innovative wooden facades and interiors, is a new architectural landmark designed to embody the Swedish concept of “Allemansrätten.” Lindner’s work on the project highlights the future of environmentally responsible architecture, aligning with the building’s LEED Gold certification.

(PRESS RELEASE) ARNSTORF, 20-Aug-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — A new architectural marvel has risen in Gothenburg, marking a significant achievement in sustainable building design. The “World of Volvo,” now recognized as Scandinavia’s largest wooden building, stands as a testament to innovative construction and environmental responsibility. The project, which features advanced building envelopes and interior elements designed and installed by Lindner Scandinavia, has become an iconic landmark that exemplifies the future of sustainable architecture.

A Landmark of Open Design and Swedish Heritage

The “World of Volvo” is more than just a building; it’s an experience center and a communal space designed to embody the Swedish ethos of “Allemansrätten,” or the right of public access to nature. This principle is deeply ingrained in Swedish culture and is now reflected in the building’s design, which invites visitors to explore and connect with the Volvo brand in a setting inspired by the natural world. The circular structure, centered around three massive tree-like pillars, echoes the traditional Swedish gathering spots in forest clearings, where people would meet under the shelter of trees to converse and connect.

Innovative Wooden Construction

Lindner Scandinavia played a pivotal role in bringing the “World of Volvo” to life, particularly through its expertise in sustainable construction materials and methods. The building’s envelope, which features curved wooden beams meticulously crafted for the main facade and roof, is a highlight of the project. Lindner collaborated with Wiehag GmbH, an Austrian partner, to produce the glulam beams that form the backbone of the structure. These beams, some of which reach an impressive 35 meters in length and weigh up to 15 tonnes, were carefully transported from Austria to Gothenburg, showcasing the complex logistics and precise engineering involved in the project.

The environmental impact of the building was minimized through the use of natural materials, with approximately 6,000 m³ of glulam beams sourced from Stora Enso, a company known for its sustainable wood production in Sweden and Austria. The intricate wooden structure not only meets the aesthetic goals of the project but also aligns with the high sustainability standards required for LEED Gold certification.

Sustainability in Every Detail

Inside the “World of Volvo,” Lindner continued its commitment to sustainability with the installation of 3,000 m² of wood acoustic panels, designed to enhance the building’s acoustics while maintaining its natural aesthetic. The installation was a complex process, with each of the nearly 2,900 panels uniquely designed to fit the building’s intricate interior layout, including the challenging spaces between vertical columns and around staircases.

In addition to the acoustic panels, Lindner was responsible for constructing a curved spiral staircase that serves as a mezzanine floor, along with 500 m² of wooden ceiling panels. The entire project was meticulously planned and executed using advanced 3D modeling and BIM (Building Information Modeling) techniques, ensuring precision in every aspect of the design and construction process.

A New Standard in Sustainable Architecture

The completion of the “World of Volvo” represents a significant achievement in sustainable building practices and architectural innovation. The collaboration between Lindner Scandinavia, Wiehag GmbH, and Stora Enso has resulted in a structure that not only serves as a functional space for Volvo but also stands as a symbol of the possibilities of modern sustainable construction.|

This landmark project in Gothenburg is expected to inspire future developments in the region and beyond, setting a new standard for environmentally responsible architecture.
