Leica Geosystems AG acquired Italian mobile mapping system company Geosoft S.r.l.

Heerbrugg/Switzerland, 26-6-2013 — /europawire.eu/ — Leica Geosystems strengthens position in mobile mapping by acquiring Geosoft S.r.l., an Italian based software and hardware company, founded in 1988, that specializes in modular cartography, digital photogrammetry and mobile mapping solutions.

Geosoft leveraged its experience in cartography and photogrammetry by developing and selling its own mobile mapping system for highway asset management and planning based on its software portfolio. Geosoft’s mobile mapping system includes cameras and a LiDAR sensor completed by a software solution that includes data acquisition, calibration, post-processing, viewing, editing and storage modules. The solution is vehicle independent requiring no modifications to the vehicle – it is compatible with Leica Geosystems’ qualified terrestrial scanners making this solution ideal for leveraging existing scanner assets.

“The market for mobile data acquisition will expand massively in the next few years,” said Juergen Dold, CEO, Leica Geosystems, “applications such as GIS tagging of road signs and markings, mapping of a road/rail corridor for clearances, and documenting city compliance for outdoor advertising, will increase the need for mobile mapping. And now our customers can use their existing equipment to make their business mobile and extend their business at the speed of traffic.”

With its unique industry-leading GUI, users of Geosoft’s mobile mapping system can navigate visually through their collected images, as both the imagery and point cloud are calibrated together – and clicking in one immediately provides access to the data in the other. The simplicity of the GUI together with the detailed access to the point cloud makes this platform ideal for all user levels.  Adding GIS metadata or calculating distances can be done easily on the fly.

Geosoft, based in Pordenone, Italy, will become part of Leica Geosystems’ Geospatial Division.
