Kübler Schwertransporte Undertakes Major Haul of Decommissioned Submarine to Sinsheim

(IN BRIEF) Kübler Schwertransporte is transporting a decommissioned 350-tonne submarine, U17, to the Sinsheim Museum of Technology. The journey involves moving the submarine along waterways and roads using a 30-axle platform trailer pulled by a MAN TGX 41.680 8×6 truck. The transport began on June 30 and is expected to reach Sinsheim on July 28.

The complex operation includes multiple 73-degree turns to navigate obstacles and requires precise balancing on a river pontoon. Experienced driver Frieder Saam leads the transport, which has been meticulously planned over five years. Project Manager Niclas Grimm highlighted the importance of teamwork and Kübler’s extensive experience in heavy-duty logistics.

(PRESS RELEASE) MUNICH, 25-Jul-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Kübler Schwertransporte, a specialist in heavy haulage, is currently transporting a 350-tonne decommissioned submarine, U17, from the German Navy to the Sinsheim Museum of Technology. The journey, which includes moving the massive vessel along both waterways and roadways, involves complex logistics and precision maneuvering. The submarine, weighing 500 tonnes including the low-loader, is mounted on a 30-axle platform trailer and pulled by a MAN TGX 41.680 8×6 truck.

The operation began on June 30 from the Technikmuseum Speyer, with the submarine being transferred to a river pontoon on the Rhine, traveling via the Rhine and Neckar to Haßmersheim, and finally by road to Sinsheim, expected to arrive on July 28. Kübler Schwertransporte, a long-time MAN customer, relies on the robustness and reliability of MAN vehicles for such demanding tasks. Niclas Grimm, Project Manager at Kübler, emphasized the importance of MAN’s reliable trucks, specially converted for heavy-duty transports.

The transport’s complexity is not only due to the submarine’s weight but also its dimensions, requiring it to be turned 73 degrees multiple times to navigate railway crossings and bridges. A custom-built turning device for this journey demonstrates Kübler’s expertise in handling unique logistical challenges.

Experienced driver Frieder Saam is at the helm of the MAN TGX, steering the colossal load with professional precision. Saam, with years of experience in heavy goods transport, finds such tasks both challenging and rewarding. The meticulous planning for this transport began five years ago, involving route scouting and coordination with authorities to ensure smooth execution.

Navigating under bridges, through narrow streets, and executing delicate turns on water, especially disembarking the pontoon at Haßmersheim, showcases the team’s skill and coordination. Each stage requires balancing the load on the pontoon to prevent any mishaps.

Niclas Grimm commended the teamwork and extensive experience of Kübler’s staff, crucial for the success of this project. The Sinsheim Museum of Technology’s trust in Kübler Schwertransporte underscores the company’s reputation for handling complex and heavy-duty transport operations worldwide.
