ISS Guckenheimer joins Beans is How Coalition to promote sustainable food choices

(PRESS RELEASE) COPENHAGEN, 18-Jan-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — ISS (CPH: ISS), a leading workplace experience and facility management company, has announced that its subsidiary ISS Guckenheimer, a premier on-site corporate restaurant management and catering company, has joined the Beans is How Coalition as a founding partner. The Coalition aims to double the consumption of beans, peas, pulses, lentils, and legumes globally by 2028 in order to promote soil health, improve nutrition, and provide increased access to food at a lower cost.

As a leader in the adoption of climate-friendly, sustainably sourced, plant-forward food provision, ISS fully supports the Beans is How mission. CEO Paul Fairhead states, “We fully support the Beans is How mission and the opportunity to embrace an ingredient that contributes to a stronger environmental ecosystem, has deep cultural roots, and is accessible for our clients and their communities.”

The rationale for emphasizing beans as a solution to ease food, climate, energy, and cost-of-living pressures includes their ability to be grown in a variety of conditions, their ability to increase soil nitrogen, and their nutritional value as a source of protein, dietary fiber, iron, zinc, vitamin B, and other vitamins and minerals. Additionally, beans and legumes are widely consumed and available across the economic spectrum, making them an affordable food choice for people of all income levels.

This initiative aligns with ISS’s values as an organization and allows their chefs to explore their culinary talents while having a positive impact on the environment. ISS serves one million meals each day globally, crafted by chefs in more than 20 countries, which gives them a unique opportunity to create authentic, locally relevant menus that have a lasting impact for their clients, employees, and the planet. Hamish Cook, ISS Head of Group Food Services, states, “Initiatives like this that align with our values as an organization and provide our chefs with the opportunity to explore their culinary talents are incredibly compelling, and we will continue to seek them out and embrace them.”

The Beans is How initiative is the latest in a series of sustainability-focused achievements for ISS, including committing to reach full net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, signing the Cool Food pledge, and achieving the top rank for protein sustainability by The Humane Society of the United States. The company is also on track to halve food waste in the coming years, and has adopted a program to reduce hunger and divert surplus food.

Beans is How brings together organizations across industries in their ambition to double the consumption of beans as well as peas, pulses, lentils, and legumes by 2028. Paul Newnham, Executive Director of the SDG2 Advocacy Hub and Chief Bean Officer, said, “Chefs are trustworthy advocates who create sustained momentum via the menus offered, the food sourced, and the causes they champion around the world. How can we tackle the climate crisis through our dining choices? How can we enjoy nutritious and delicious meals that don’t cost the Earth? Beans is How.”

As a founding partner of the Beans is How Coalition, ISS Guckenheimer is committed to promoting the consumption of beans and legumes as a sustainable and nutritious food choice. The company’s commitment to sustainability and its ability to serve one million meals a day globally positions it well to make a significant impact on the environment and the health of communities around the world.
