HØST PtX Esbjerg Secures EUR 13 Million DEVEX Grant to Advance Danish-German Hydrogen Economy

HØST PtX Esbjerg Secures EUR 13 Million DEVEX Grant to Advance Danish-German Hydrogen Economy

(IN BRIEF) The HØST PtX Esbjerg project has been awarded up to EUR 13 million in DEVEX funding by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA). This funding will support technical studies and front-end engineering design (FEED) work leading up to the project’s final investment decision (FID) in 2026. The grant was secured as part of the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) and highlights HØST’s role in advancing the Danish-German hydrogen economy and supporting the EU’s long-term decarbonization goals. HØST is the only Danish Power-to-X project to receive such a grant, positioning it as a key player in the European energy transition.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESBJERG, 4-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — The European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA) has awarded the HØST PtX Esbjerg project with DEVEX funding, marking a significant milestone in its development. This funding, totaling up to EUR 13 million, will support front-end engineering design (FEED) and other technical studies leading up to the project’s final investment decision (FID). The news signifies the EU’s recognition of the project’s maturity and the high-quality work accomplished since its inception in 2021, as stated by David Dupont-Mouritzen, Project Director of HØST PtX Esbjerg.

This DEVEX funding comes as part of a successful application to the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) submitted by HØST in October 2024. HØST’s status as a Project of Common Interest (PCI) — a designation for cross-border infrastructure initiatives that connect the energy systems of EU countries — played a crucial role in securing this grant. The CEF’s focus is to facilitate affordable, secure, and sustainable energy while driving the long-term decarbonization of the economy in line with the Paris Agreement. The grant underscores the vital role HØST is poised to play in advancing the Danish-German hydrogen economy and directly supporting the EU’s decarbonization objectives.

The DEVEX funding will be used to propel HØST towards FID, scheduled for the second half of 2026. Specifically, the funding will support FEED and other technical studies that are essential for moving the project forward. This development is aligned with the broader vision of connecting the Danish hydrogen backbone to Germany by 2030, a goal that further solidifies the project’s contribution to EU decarbonization. Following the grant approval, the next steps for HØST include preparing the necessary data and documentation before signing the formal grant agreement.

The European Commission’s total allocation of EUR 1.25 billion in grants will be divided among 41 cross-border energy infrastructure projects, including initiatives focused on electricity grids, hydrogen infrastructure, and CO2 infrastructure. Notably, HØST is the only Danish Power-to-X project to receive such a grant, positioning it as a key player in Europe’s energy transition.

About HØST PtX Esbjerg

Part of Copenhagen Infrastructure Partner’s (CIP) Energy Transition Fund I, the HØST PtX Esbjerg project is a leading, Danish Power-to-X project under development, deploying large-scale industrial use of electrolysis technology on gigawatt level to produce green fuels. Powered entirely by renewables, HØST PtX Esbjerg will produce approximately 120,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per annum for use in the chemicals, steel, and refinery industry, predominantly expected in the German market. This corresponds to +600,000 tonnes of green ammonia per annum, which can be used at feedstock to produce green fertiliser or as green maritime fuel.
