(PRESS RELEASE) TRIESTE, 30-Jan-2022 — /EuropaWire/ — Generali (BIT: G), one of the largest global insurance and asset management providers, reaffirms its commitment to sustainability, diversity, equity, and inclusion at the upcoming Barcolana sailing event in the Gulf of Trieste. As the presenting sponsor of the event, Generali has been a long-standing supporter of Barcolana for over 40 years.

Organized by the Barcola and Grignano Sailing Club, this year’s event will feature the third edition of the ‘Generali Women in Sailing’ Trophy. The trophy will be awarded to the first mixed team led by a female skipper during the ‘Autumn Cup’ on October 8th. The winner will also receive a coaching and leadership course tailored to their needs, provided by Generali Academy. In 2022, Wendy Schmidt, an American businesswoman, philanthropist, shipowner, and skipper of Deep Blue, claimed the trophy.

Under the banner of ‘Women in Sailing by Generali’, the initiative aims to promote diversity, equal opportunities, and inclusion, giving visibility to all women participating in the event, both on and off the sea. This year, ‘Women in Sailing by Generali’ will serve as the final stage of World Sailing’s global program for women’s sailing, known as the “Steering the Course” program. Additionally, the initiative will feature an at-sea event and the participation of the #WomenInSailing team, comprised of male and female athletes from the Società velica Barcola e Grignano, in various regattas throughout the season. A dedicated Gallery on the www.barcolana.it website will inspire more women to become protagonists both at sea and beyond.

The Chairman of Generali, Andrea Sironi, said: “Through participation in sporting events, Generali promotes the culture of sport and a healthy lifestyle. For many years it has also done so in collaboration with Barcolana, a sailing event with a long tradition but capable of innovating, attentive to environmental sustainability and the promotion of diversity, equity and inclusion. This is why we are historically close to it, helping it to grow internationally and promoting its activities, with the ‘Woman in Sailing by Generali’ project and also through our The Human Safety Net Foundation, so that this event will be, for the community of Trieste and for all those who participate coming from all over Europe and beyond, an opportunity for sport, entertainment and growth”.

During Barcolana, Generali’s initiative, The Human Safety Net, will also host activities open to the public. The foundation’s mission is to support vulnerable families with young children and promote the inclusion of refugees through work and entrepreneurship.

Generali remains committed to supporting Barcolana and its projects that have contributed to the event’s growth and international recognition. Recent years have seen Generali focus on environmental initiatives, integration, diversity, and inclusion. Notably, renowned sailor and social activist Isabelle Joschke, as well as the ‘Generali Sea Talks’ featuring conversations with esteemed women sailors Dee Caffari and Vicky Song, exemplify Generali’s dedication to these values.

Sailing, a sport deeply embraced by Generali, will serve as a platform to discuss gender equality and challenge traditional gender associations with marine occupations.
