Gasum Partners with DNV to Ensure Compliance and Accuracy in FuelEU Maritime Pooling Service

Gasum Partners with DNV to Ensure Compliance and Accuracy in FuelEU Maritime Pooling Service

(IN BRIEF) Gasum has partnered with DNV to enhance its FuelEU Maritime pooling service, aiming to ensure the accuracy and compliance of emissions data for the shipping industry. DNV will use its Emissions Connect solution to gather and verify real-time emissions data from vessels in the pool, meeting EU regulations for carbon intensity reductions. The FuelEU Maritime regulation allows vessels to offset emissions through pooling, offering a cost-effective way to comply with these rules. Gasum’s bio-LNG, a renewable fuel, plays a key role in this initiative, helping to reduce emissions in the maritime sector. The partnership underscores both companies’ commitment to sustainability and compliance within the shipping industry.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 25-Feb-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Gasum has entered into a partnership with DNV to enhance the accuracy and compliance of its FuelEU Maritime pooling service. DNV, a globally recognized leader in maritime classification and advisory services, will verify the emissions data for Gasum’s pooling system, helping ensure transparency and compliance with EU regulations.

This collaboration leverages DNV’s advanced Emissions Connect solution, which will collect and validate real-time data on fuel consumption and emissions from all vessels in the pool. The system requires a straightforward, cost-effective plug-and-play device to be installed on each vessel, ensuring seamless data tracking. At the end of each year, DNV will verify the overall balance of the pool for EU reporting, fulfilling the requirements of the FuelEU Maritime regulation. This regulation mandates that vessels reduce carbon intensity from purchased fuel, with the reduction target increasing incrementally over the years.

Gasum and DNV have an established relationship, with Gasum using DNV’s Fuel Boss system for LNG delivery management. With DNV’s trusted expertise, Gasum aims to ensure the highest level of accuracy and compliance in the management of its FuelEU Maritime pool. The pool allows vessels to offset their emissions by using the surplus reductions from other vessels, offering an efficient and cost-effective way to comply with EU regulations.

Jani Arala, Solution Lead at Gasum, emphasized the importance of data in maintaining a balanced pool: “Accurate and reliable data is crucial for keeping the pool in balance. DNV’s Emissions Connect is the best tool on the market for gathering this data, and their reputation and experience make them an ideal partner for us.”

Helge Hermundsgård, Head of Sales for Emissions Connect at DNV, added: “We’re proud to support Gasum in managing the FuelEU Maritime pool. With growing regulatory pressure on shipowners, our solution ensures they can meet FuelEU Maritime’s requirements efficiently and with confidence.”

FuelEU Maritime, an EU regulation aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the maritime sector, allows for the voluntary pooling of emission reductions. This creates a system where vessels exceeding compliance can offset emissions for those that fall short, effectively providing “compliance as a service.” By using Gasum’s pooling service, shipping companies can reduce their compliance costs and avoid penalties while contributing to a more sustainable maritime industry.

Gasum’s bio-LNG, a renewable and environmentally friendly fuel, plays a key role in the service, as it offers life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions up to 90% lower than those of fossil fuels, and even negative emissions when produced from manure. The company’s goal is to deliver 7 TWh of renewable gas annually, including biomethane and e-methane, by 2027.
