Collaboration combines BASF’s Licity® 2698 X F binder and Group14’s SCC55® silicon material, enhancing battery performance with higher durability and energy capacity

(IN BRIEF) BASF and Group14 Technologies have unveiled a groundbreaking silicon battery solution combining BASF’s Licity 2698 X F binder and Group14’s SCC55 silicon material. This new solution boosts battery performance, offering faster charging, higher energy density, and remarkable durability. With improved cycle life and scalability, these batteries are set to revolutionize energy storage and accelerate the transition to electric mobility.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUDWIGSHAFEN, 14-May-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — BASF, a global leader in chemical innovation, and Group14 Technologies, the largest manufacturer of advanced silicon battery materials, have announced the development of a performance-enhancing silicon battery solution. This innovative solution uses commercially available materials: BASF’s Licity® 2698 X F binder and Group14’s SCC55® advanced silicon battery material.

The partnership has produced a drop-in-ready solution that significantly boosts the performance of batteries using silicon-dominant anodes. This technology delivers faster charging, increased energy density, and exceptional durability under even the most demanding conditions. Under standard room temperature conditions, the test cells achieved over 1,000 cycles, retaining 80% of their capacity. Impressively, even at a temperature of 113°F (45°C), these cells maintained more than 500 cycles while delivering nearly four times the capacity of traditional graphite anodes.

Rick Luebbe, CEO and Co-Founder of Group14 Technologies, highlighted the milestone, stating, “The future of energy storage powered by silicon batteries is here, and our collaboration with BASF is driving mainstream adoption at unprecedented speed. By combining our technologies, we’re enabling battery manufacturers to deliver high-performance, scalable silicon batteries faster than ever, meeting today’s rising energy demands.”

BASF’s Licity 2698 X F binder was developed specifically for silicon-rich anodes and plays a crucial role in stabilizing the electrode under challenging conditions. The collaboration optimizes BASF’s advanced binder with Group14’s SCC55 material, resulting in batteries that exceed industry standards for cycle life and performance.

Dr. Dirk Wulff, Global Technical Battery Binder Manager at BASF, emphasized the significance of their work, noting, “Silicon is now a viable technology without the limitations it once had. By combining our expertise, we’ve achieved an anode cell chemistry that not only meets but exceeds industry requirements.”

BASF’s battery binder business continues to push forward innovations, with Prof. Dr. Thomas Schiele, Vice President of BASF’s battery binder business in EMEA, adding, “Strong, capable lithium batteries are essential for the mass adoption of electric mobility. Our Licity binders play a crucial role in advancing this technology.”
