Carbon-Capturing Partnership: Borealis and Infinium Launch Low-Carbon Plastics Revolution

Carbon-Capturing Partnership: Borealis and Infinium Launch Low-Carbon Plastics Revolution

(IN BRIEF) Borealis and Infinium have formed a strategic partnership to produce low-carbon plastics using Infinium’s eNaphtha, a sustainable feedstock made from captured CO2 emissions. This collaboration aims to reduce the carbon footprint of polyolefins, a type of plastic widely used in consumer goods. Infinium’s eNaphtha, which can be used in existing manufacturing processes, will be supplied to Borealis’ facility in Finland. The partnership highlights the potential of using carbon capture technology to create more sustainable plastic products.

(PRESS RELEASE) VIENNA, 20-Aug-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — In a groundbreaking partnership, Borealis, a leading provider of advanced plastic solutions, and Infinium, a pioneer in eFuels, have joined forces to produce low-carbon plastics derived from waste carbon dioxide emissions. This innovative initiative aims to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of polyolefins, the versatile plastics used in everyday consumer goods, from packaging to medical devices.

Infinium’s new product, eNaphtha, will serve as a sustainable feedstock for Borealis’ plastic manufacturing processes. eNaphtha, created from captured CO2 emissions, offers a drop-in replacement for traditional fossil-based naphtha without requiring changes to existing manufacturing infrastructure. This partnership marks a significant step toward the decarbonization of the plastics industry, aligning with global efforts to reduce environmental impact.

Robert Schuetzle, CEO of Infinium, highlighted the environmental benefits of this collaboration: “Many everyday plastic products originate from fossil-based materials. With Infinium eNaphtha, Borealis can now produce plastics with a drastically reduced carbon footprint, providing more sustainable options for consumers.”

The eNaphtha, produced at Infinium’s Texas facility, has already been shipped to Borealis’ Porvoo facility in Finland. This material is certified by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) system, ensuring its sustainable origins and transparent chain of custody.

Mirjam Mayer, VP of Circular Economy Solutions at Borealis, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration: “This partnership with Infinium allows us to expand our sustainable product offerings. By utilizing atmospheric carbon captured from emissions, we are making strides toward a circular economy in plastics, aligning with our mission to reinvent essentials for sustainable living.”

This collaboration underscores the potential for innovative partnerships to drive the transition to a more sustainable and circular economy, meeting the growing consumer demand for eco-friendly products and solutions.

About Infinium
Infinium is an electrofuels provider on a mission to decarbonize the world. Electrofuels, also known as eFuels, are a new class of synthetic fuels created using renewable power and waste carbon dioxide, not petroleum or resources that compete with food. Infinium eFuels such as eSAF jet fuel and eDiesel can be dropped into existing trucks, planes and ships, significantly reducing harmful carbon dioxide emissions compared to fossil-based fuels. In addition to helping the transport industry meet carbon reduction goals, Infinium eNaphtha is a lower carbon alternative for chemical processing, including plastics production.
