BMT presents Humans and Autonomy, Strategies for the Maritime Workforce at the IMarEST’s 2020 Annual Conference

BMT’s Phaedra Gibson, Head of Training Services, will be presenting on Humans and Autonomy and the future of the maritime workforce

(PRESS RELEASE) TEDDINGTON, UK, 6-Jul-2020 — /EuropaWire/ — Leading international design, engineering, science and risk management consultancy, BMT takes part in the two-week long virtual conference IMarEST’s (Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology). BMT’s Head of Training Services, Phaedra Gibson will be presenting on Humans and Autonomy and the future of the maritime workforce.

IMarEST’s 2020 Annual Conference, beginning on the 6 of July will feature multiple streams covering many of the hottest topics in the maritime sector – from the challenges of decarbonisation and a wider shift to more sustainable ways of operating to developments in autonomous systems.

Phaedra’s presentation titled: “Humans and Autonomy, Strategies for the Maritime Workforce” looks to address the impact emerging technology will have on the workforce. In particular, the need to shape competencies which enable the achievement of operational success is a crucial part of a strategic roadmap. The maritime industry could adopt a range of strategies to ensure the right skills and training are in place, future-proofing the workforce.

Regarding future skills, Phaedra said,

“A future filled with complex change is often perceived through a lens where technological advancement takes priority. While there are many challenges to overcome in implementing remote and automated systems, it is important to consider the impact on human competency and behaviour.

“Transformative technologies will fundamentally change roles, tasks and the skills needed in the maritime workforce. When we look at the complexity of AI, robotics, autonomous systems, augmented and optimised humans, all working in harmony together, then there will no doubt be ethical and leadership challenges to address.

“While these technologies are at different stages of maturity, the maritime community needs a long-term training strategy to optimise the workforce to be equipped with the skills needed for when this technology is implemented.”

We offer training services to help organisations adapt to rapid changes in technology. Our services draw on the expertise of training consultants, human factors experts, technologists and psychologists.
