Avebe also wins phase 2 of the New Food Challenge

Veendam, The Netherlands, 06-Jul-2018 — /EuropaWire/ — Avebe also won phase 2 of the New Food Challenge. This means that Avebe will receive about 250,000 euros from the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality for the further development of textured potato protein.

Last year, Avebe received about 30,000 euros for the first phase of the New Food Challenge, the feasibility study. Avebe and the other five winners have until the summer of 2019 to design their projects and present them to representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO).

About textured potato protein

In phase 1 Avebe demonstrated that it is technically feasible to make an ingredient from the potato that resembles meat in terms of its texture (see photo). We call this ingredient textured potato protein, and it can be used to make vegetable-based meat substitutes. However, further development is needed to make textured potato protein a success. This will be fleshed out in the coming year by a multidisciplinary team of Avebe colleagues.

About the New Food Challenge

The New Food Challenge is intended for companies that develop new products based on vegetable proteins and who know how to give them an important place in everyday eating patterns with a sound marketing strategy. The aim of the New Food Challenge is to get more new healthy and attractive products based on vegetable protein on the shelves. This is in line with the dietary recommendations of the Health Council of the Netherlands and the Food Pyramid of the Nutrition Centre. Consuming more vegetable proteins is not only healthier, but also leads to more sustainable food production. The New Food Challenge is an initiative of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO).
