ANDRITZ Selected for FEED of Major Carbon Capture Unit at Westenergy’s Waste-to-Energy Plant in Finland

(IN BRIEF) ANDRITZ has been selected to perform the front-end engineering design (FEED) for a large-scale carbon capture unit at Westenergy’s waste-to-energy plant in Finland. The project, ordered by ECCU Ltd, aims to capture all CO2 emissions from the plant’s flue gases for use in producing carbon-neutral synthetic e-fuels. This initiative marks a crucial step in advancing decarbonization and the circular economy, with a final investment decision expected by early 2025.

(PRESS RELEASE) GRAZ, 24-Jul-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — International technology group ANDRITZ has been awarded the front-end engineering design (FEED) contract for a large-scale carbon capture unit at Westenergy’s waste-to-energy plant in Mustasaari, Finland. This project aims to significantly advance decarbonization efforts and promote the circular economy.

Project Overview

The order was placed by ECCU Ltd, a joint venture comprising Westenergy Ltd, CPC Finland Oy, and funds managed by Prime Capital AG. The primary objective is to capture all the carbon dioxide emitted from the flue gases of the Mustasaari plant, which converts sorted, non-recyclable municipal waste into district heating and electricity. The captured CO2 will be liquefied, with a substantial portion designated for producing carbon-neutral synthetic e-fuels.

ANDRITZ’s Role and Responsibilities

As the FEED contractor, ANDRITZ will refine the carbon capture plant concept and develop the design documentation necessary for the joint venture’s final investment decision. The design will emphasize optimal integration of the carbon capture process into the existing waste-to-energy plant, maximizing the use of available heat and recycling residues in a closed-loop system.

Olli Alhoniemi, Managing Director of Westenergy, remarked, “The FEED phase is critical to the implementation of our decarbonization project, which will help us take a significant step towards a more sustainable future. We are pleased to partner with ANDRITZ, whose technical expertise, proactive approach, and full life cycle services have impressed us.”

Harald Reissner, Senior Vice President of ANDRITZ Clean Air Technologies, added, “We are grateful for the trust the customer has placed in us and honored to contribute to this groundbreaking project. This initiative aligns perfectly with our commitment to support our customers with innovative technologies for the green transition.”

Future Developments

The joint venture plans to make a final decision on the project’s implementation by early 2025. The captured carbon dioxide from Westenergy’s plant is intended to supply a power-to-x plant in Kristinestad, Finland, which will produce synthetic e-fuel from green hydrogen and carbon dioxide. ANDRITZ is also responsible for the FEED of the green hydrogen plant in Kristinestad.

This project represents a significant milestone in the push towards a sustainable future, leveraging cutting-edge technology to reduce carbon emissions and promote renewable energy solutions.
