STRABAG Advances Decarbonization Strategy with Science Based Targets Initiative Approval for Emissions Reduction Plan

(IN BRIEF) STRABAG has secured validation from the Science Based Targets initiative for its climate goals through 2030, committing to a 42 percent reduction in direct and energy-related emissions and a 25 percent reduction across its value chain. The company’s strategy focuses on electrifying its vehicle fleet, transitioning construction machinery to renewable energy sources, and reducing emissions from asphalt production. Additional efforts include adopting low-emission materials and strengthening collaboration across the supply chain. The validation confirms that STRABAG’s sustainability approach aligns with global climate targets and supports its transition toward a more environmentally responsible business model.

(PRESS RELEASE) VIENNA, 19-Mar-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — STRABAG has received validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its climate targets through to 2030, marking a significant milestone in the construction group’s sustainability strategy. The company has committed to reducing its direct emissions and those associated with purchased energy by 42 percent compared to 2023 levels. In addition, STRABAG aims to cut emissions across its value chain—particularly those linked to construction materials and the use phase of infrastructure—by 25 percent.

To achieve these goals, STRABAG is focusing on three primary areas of action. First, the company plans to electrify a substantial portion of its passenger car and commercial vehicle fleet. Second, it is working to transition approximately two-thirds of its construction machinery to renewable energy sources. This includes the use of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) as well as the development and deployment of alternative propulsion technologies, such as hydrogen-powered heavy machinery, including a wheel loader already being tested in Austria. Third, the company is targeting emissions reductions at its asphalt mixing plants, where gradual improvements are expected to lower overall environmental impact.

Beyond its own operations, STRABAG is also addressing emissions across its broader value chain. This involves increasing the use of low-emission construction materials, enhancing efficiency in project planning, and strengthening collaboration with suppliers and partners to reduce upstream and downstream emissions.

Dr. Marco Xaver Bornschlegl, Head of Central Division Innovation and Digitalisation at STRABAG, emphasized that the validation of these targets confirms the company’s sustainability roadmap is aligned with scientific standards. He noted that achieving meaningful emissions reductions requires transparency, comparability, and adherence to science-based methodologies, as well as a transition away from fossil fuels toward renewable energy solutions. He also highlighted the importance of collaboration with customers, suppliers, and policymakers to drive systemic change.

The Science Based Targets initiative, established in 2015, is a global collaboration of non-governmental organizations that supports companies in setting emissions reduction targets aligned with limiting global warming to 1.5°C under the Paris Agreement. More than 1,000 companies worldwide have joined the initiative. STRABAG formally committed to the SBTi framework at the end of 2024, and its near-term targets have now been officially validated following a detailed review process.
