Rogun Dam reaches 1,110-metre milestone as Webuild drives energy transformation in Tajikistan and Central Asia

(IN BRIEF) Webuild’s construction of the Rogun Dam in Tajikistan has reached a crucial stage, with the dam’s crest approaching 1,110 metres above sea level. President Emomalī Rahmon visited the site with senior officials to highlight the project’s importance in doubling the nation’s energy production and securing power for around 10 million people. Standing 335 metres tall upon completion, Rogun will be the world’s tallest dam and a cornerstone of energy stability in Central Asia, where much of the population endures winter blackouts. The project has advanced by 100 metres in the past year, with 13 million cubic metres of embankment material placed and extensive consolidation works completed. Webuild emphasised the scale of the challenge, with construction taking place in extreme mountain conditions, while also pointing to its track record of more than 300 global hydroelectric projects. As Rogun nears its next stages, Webuild is preparing to inaugurate the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam in September, further consolidating its position as the global leader in water infrastructure.

(PRESS RELEASE) MILAN, 29-Aug-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — The Rogun Dam in Tajikistan, under construction by Webuild, has reached a new technical milestone as it approaches an elevation of 1,110 metres above sea level — a key step that will allow the reservoir to rise further and significantly boost energy generation. President Emomalī Rahmon, accompanied by Prime Minister Qohir Rasulzoda, ministers, government officials, and representatives of client OJSC Rogun HPP, visited the site to underline the project’s strategic role for Tajikistan and the wider Central Asian region.

When completed, Rogun will be the tallest dam in the world at 335 metres, with an installed capacity equivalent to three nuclear reactors. It will supply electricity to an estimated 10 million people, doubling Tajikistan’s current energy output and helping to stabilise power supply across the region. The project is especially critical in a country where nearly 70% of the population faces electricity shortages during winter.

The past year alone has seen rapid progress, with the dam body rising by around 100 metres. Approximately 13 million cubic metres of embankment material have been placed, including 3.5 million cubic metres of loam forming the dam’s impermeable core. To strengthen the foundation and abutments, more than 180,000 linear metres of injection works have been completed, alongside consolidation and sealing interventions in key tunnels.

The Rogun site showcases engineering excellence under extreme conditions, from severe winter cold to intense summer storms, posing formidable logistical and technical challenges. With more than 300 dams and hydroelectric plants built worldwide, Webuild brings unmatched experience to this project, further solidifying its position as a global leader in water infrastructure.

As Rogun advances, Webuild is also preparing to celebrate the inauguration of another landmark achievement: the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, Africa’s largest dam, scheduled to open in September. Alongside Rogun and Ethiopia’s GERD, the Group is delivering Snowy 2.0, Australia’s largest hydroelectric initiative, underscoring its commitment to global sustainable energy and water security.

ENR Engineering News-Record recently reaffirmed Webuild’s leadership by ranking it first in the Top 250 International Contractors for water projects — a position held for more than a decade — reflecting the Group’s expertise in building resilient infrastructure to address worldwide water and energy challenges.

Webuild is a global leader in the construction of large, complex infrastructure projects, with a focus on sustainable mobility, hydropower, water treatment, and green buildings. A recognized leader in the water sector and active in about 50 countries, the Group employs approximately 95,000 people of over 125 nationalities. It boasts nearly 120 years of experience with over 3,700 completed projects. Its track record includes 13,648 kilometres of railways, 891 kilometres of metro lines, 82,577 kilometres of roads and highways, 1,022 kilometres of bridges and viaducts, 3,462 kilometres of tunnels, and 318 dams and hydropower plants. Among its most iconic projects are the expansion of the Panama Canal, the Long Beach International Gateway bridge in California (USA), the Second Bosphorus Bridge (Turkey), the Sydney Metro Northwest skytrain viaduct and bridge (Australia), the Kingdom Centre skyscraper in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), and metro lines in cities such as Copenhagen, Paris, Rome, Milan, Naples, Doha, Thessaloniki, and Riyadh.
Ongoing projects include the New Genoa Breakwater, the Brenner Base Tunnel, the Pedemontana Lombarda Highway, Metro di Roma’s Line C, the Genoa-Milan and Naples-Bari high-speed/high-capacity railways, the Palermo-Catania-Messina high-capacity railway, the Snowy 2.0 hydropower scheme in Australian and the Trojena dams in Saudi Arabia. As of December 31, 2024, revenues
totalled €12 billion. As of June 30, 2025, its total order backlog stands at approximately €59 billion, with over 90% of its construction backlog related to projects linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Listed on the Borsa Italiana stock
