Eviden Leads European Initiative to Enhance Cybersecurity with CYDERCO Project

(IN BRIEF) Eviden, part of the Atos Group, is leading the CYDERCO project, a three-year European initiative co-funded by the European Commission to enhance the capabilities of Security Operations Centers (SOCs) across the EU. The project, coordinated by Eviden in Romania and involving partners like Atos in Spain, ISEP in Portugal, and the Romanian National Cybersecurity Directorate (DNSC), aims to develop a platform for improved detection, response, and collaboration against cyber threats. Key features include AI-driven analytics, network traffic analysis, and advanced threat intelligence sharing. The initiative seeks to strengthen cybersecurity resilience and foster collaboration between public and private sectors, providing tools for faster, more effective cyber incident responses across Europe.

(PRESS RELEASE) PARIS, 28-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Eviden, a digital, cloud, big data, and security leader within the Atos Group, has announced its role as coordinator for the CYDERCO (CYber DEtection, Response, and Collaboration) project. This three-year European project, co-funded by the European Commission, aims to bolster the capabilities of Security Operations Centers (SOCs) across the EU by developing a platform to enhance detection, response, and collaboration against cyber threats targeting network and information systems.

Coordinated by Eviden’s team in Romania, CYDERCO is a collaborative effort involving four key partners: Eviden in Romania, Atos in Spain, the Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP) in Portugal, and the Romanian National Cybersecurity Directorate (DNSC). The project is designed to empower SOCs with critical insights into threat actors, including their tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) and indicators of compromise (IoCs), thus enabling faster, more effective responses to cyber incidents.

The CYDERCO platform will feature several advanced capabilities, including:

  • Data Analytics Platform: SOCs will utilize this tool to swiftly identify, investigate, and mitigate cybersecurity threats. Built with modern technology, the platform ensures stability, scalability, and rapid response capabilities.
  • Network Traffic Analysis (NTA): This feature focuses on detecting suspicious network activities, including potential malware and abnormal traffic patterns.
  • Host Intrusion Detection Service (HIDS): A comprehensive solution for detecting threats across Linux, Windows, and Mac platforms, providing advanced capabilities to identify rootkits, malware, and other malicious activities.
  • AI-Driven Analytics: By leveraging artificial intelligence, the platform will go beyond traditional Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) systems, providing superior detection of complex and emerging cyber threats.

Eviden’s role also includes leading the development of the platform’s Threat Intelligence capabilities, which aim to facilitate:

  • Threat Intelligence Sharing: Enabling secure, synchronized sharing of threat data across various entities.
  • Threat Intelligence Enrichment: Analyzing relationships between different threat elements, such as malware and attack campaigns.
  • Sighting Support: Alerting SOC teams about known threats in their systems for proactive defense.
  • Rapid Distribution: Allowing quick deployment of threat signatures and countermeasures across diverse environments.

Alex Rusandu, BDS Global Product Director at Eviden, emphasized the importance of their involvement: “With CYDERCO, Eviden is leveraging our extensive expertise in incident response, threat intelligence, and cybersecurity to deliver a platform that meets the needs of SOCs across Europe. Our goal is to provide the tools and technologies necessary to tackle evolving cyber threats.”

Dan Cîmpean, Director of the Romanian National Cybersecurity Directorate, highlighted the project’s significance: “CYDERCO represents a forward-thinking initiative that will enhance cybersecurity resilience within the EU. It introduces innovative elements to strengthen the public-private sector collaboration across the cybersecurity landscape.”

Isabel Praça, Coordinator Professor at ISEP and Senior Researcher at GECAD, added: “For ISEP, the CYDERCO project builds on the success of previous H2020 projects and allows us to achieve high maturity in our solutions for SOC analysts. This partnership with Eviden, Atos, and DNSC is invaluable, enabling us to test and refine our platform in real-world settings.”

Rodrigo Diaz Rodriguez, Head of Cybersecurity Laboratory at Atos Spain, described CYDERCO as a crucial step for the EU’s cybersecurity future: “The project will bring advanced detection and information-sharing capabilities, fostering a stronger, more collaborative cybersecurity ecosystem across public and private entities.”

About the project

The project has a duration of 36 months, starting October 1, 2023, and a total budget of 2,881,082 euros, with a funding rate of 50% of the eligible costs of the action. The project consortium is made up of 4 partners from 3 European countries and provides a mix of large industrial entities (Eviden Technologies Romania and Atos Spain), academic institution (ISEP), public sector and technology transfer institution (DNSC). They have well defined complementary expertise and roles that address the crucial needs to generate high-value outcomes. The partners are well positioned to cooperate and collaborate to respond to the technological challenges of CYDERCO combining technological and scientific know-how, industrial and end user perspective, as well as business and market insight. The partners have all the necessary expertise which is required for the successful completion of the CYDERCO project.

October 1st marks an important milestone of the project: 1 year of hard work. During this time, several deliverables were successfully completed such as the Project Handbook, Stakeholders Analysis, Pilot Definition, Platform Design, and the Dissemination and Communication Plan.

The project financed under Grant Agreement nr. 101128052 is supported by the European Cybersecurity Competence Centre.

The project is funded by the European Union. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or European Commission. Neither the European Union nor the granting authority can be held responsible for them.
