(PRESS RELEASE) LAUSANNE, 14-Dec-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Tetra Pak’s groundbreaking innovation in sustainable packaging has been recognized with the ‘Resource Efficiency’ Award at the Sustainable Packaging News Awards 2024. This accolade celebrates the company’s pioneering development of a paper-based barrier material, marking a significant advancement in reducing the carbon footprint of aseptic carton packaging.

In collaboration with Lactogal, Tetra Pak launched this world-first paper-based barrier, designed to replace the traditional aluminium foil layer in aseptic cartons. This innovation not only cuts the carbon footprint of the packaging by up to one-third, as verified by the Carbon Trust, but also boosts the paperboard content in the carton to approximately 80%. When combined with plant-based polymers, the renewable material content reaches up to 90%, showcasing a new standard in low-carbon, sustainable packaging solutions.

The global food industry faces increasing demand for renewable, low-carbon materials, and Tetra Pak’s innovation addresses this challenge while maintaining exceptional food safety and performance. The paper-based barrier offers protection against oxygen and light, comparable to aluminium, while advancing the packaging industry’s shift toward sustainability.

Marco Marchetti, Tetra Pak’s Vice President of Packaging Materials, Sales, and Distribution Solutions, expressed pride in receiving the award. He emphasized the company’s commitment to creating sustainable solutions that balance food protection with environmental impact. “This recognition underscores our dedication to customer-driven innovation,” Marchetti stated. “By harnessing the power of paper and collaborating with partners like Lactogal, we are leading the charge toward a low-carbon future in food systems and packaging.”

The achievement not only highlights Tetra Pak’s leadership in the industry but also reinforces the value of collaboration with customers, suppliers, and partners to achieve meaningful progress in sustainability.
