Terna Modernizes Naples Metropolitan Area’s Electricity Grid with Sustainable Technology

(IN BRIEF) Terna, Italy’s national grid operator, is continuing its modernization efforts for the electricity grid in the metropolitan area of Naples. This phase involves replacing a 5 km underground cable with a more reliable and sustainable XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) cable. The project, part of a broader initiative launched in March 2022, aims to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of the transmission service. It includes the removal of 10 km of overhead lines, freeing up approximately 25 hectares of land in the city of Naples affected by existing electrical infrastructure. The work is expected to be completed in about 70 days, with efforts to minimize traffic disruptions.

(PRESS RELEASE) ROME, 16-Sep-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Works continue for modernisation of the electricity grid in the metropolitan area of Naples. The current phase involves replacement of the 5 km underground cable between the “Napoli Centro” and “Doganella” primary substations.

Italian national grid operator, Terna, will complete the work in approximately 70 days, starting on 20 September. Neapolitan municipalities I, II and IV will be affected, and specifically via Acton, via Cristoforo Colombo along with the area around Piazza Municipio, and Via Ponte dei Granili.

The wider project, launched in March 2022, involves replacement of the existing oil-filled cable with an XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) cable, recognised as particularly reliable and sustainable technology.

Terna has shared a works plan with the municipal authority aimed at minimising impacts on existing roads and reducing traffic restrictions on the affected stretches.

The works, set out in the Collaboration Agreement signed in 2020 by Terna and the municipal authority of Naples, fall within the scope of the plan coordinated by the Permanent Technical Committee overseen by the municipality. The goal is to make the transmission service more efficient and sustainable through modernisation of existing cable connections. Development will also include the demolition of 10 km of 220 kV overhead lines in the city of Naples, freeing up approximately 25 hectares of land affected by existing electrical infrastructure.
