(IN BRIEF) Sweco has acquired assar architects, a leading Belgian-Luxembourgish architectural firm known for its work on major public and private projects, including NATO’s headquarters and several of Belgium’s largest hospitals. The acquisition adds 150 professionals to Sweco’s team and strengthens its architecture offering in Belgium and Luxembourg, where it combines engineering and design expertise to deliver sustainable and digitally driven solutions. Business Area President Erwin Malcorps highlighted that the partnership will enhance Sweco’s capacity to support the region’s green transition and modernisation efforts. The integration follows Sweco’s 2023 acquisition of VK architects+engineers, continuing its strategy of growth and innovation in sustainable urban development.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 16-Oct-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Sweco has announced the acquisition of assar architects, one of Belgium and Luxembourg’s most prominent architectural firms known for its expertise in large-scale public and private sector projects. The move significantly expands Sweco’s architectural presence in the region and reinforces its integrated offering in architecture and engineering consultancy.

Based in Belgium, assar architects is recognised for its “inclusive architecture” approach and a diverse portfolio spanning offices, commercial buildings, hospitals, defence, education, and urban planning. The firm has played a pivotal role in landmark projects such as NATO’s headquarters, major Belgian healthcare facilities, and developments for European institutions and multinational corporations. With this acquisition, Sweco strengthens its organisation by adding approximately 150 experts, and assar architects has been fully consolidated into Sweco as of today. The company reported a turnover of around EUR 16.5 million in 2024.

“I am very pleased to welcome assar architects as part of the Sweco family,” said Erwin Malcorps, Business Area President of Sweco in Belgium. “We have already worked together on complex projects in healthcare, government, defence, and sustainable urban development. By joining forces, we can further enhance client value and deliver world-class solutions for the green transition and the modernisation of our built environments.”

The acquisition comes at a time when Belgium and Luxembourg are undergoing a transformative phase toward sustainable, energy-efficient, and digitally connected urban development, supported by key EU initiatives such as the Green Deal, NextGenerationEU, and Horizon Europe.

Sweco already holds a strong position in Belgium’s market, offering a unique combination of architecture and engineering services that create synergies across public and private sectors. This latest acquisition builds on Sweco’s 2023 purchase of VK architects+engineers, which added 600 professionals to its ranks. With assar architects joining, Sweco further consolidates its leadership in sustainable design and infrastructure innovation across the region.
