Skanska Secures Major Contract to Upgrade State Route 78 in California

(IN BRIEF) Skanska has been awarded a USD 102 million contract by Caltrans to upgrade and modernize State Route 78 in San Diego County, California. The project, recorded in the US order bookings for Q1 2025, will involve constructing an acceleration lane on the eastbound side and rehabilitating more than 40 lane-miles of the roadway’s structural surface. Additional elements include building new curb ramps meeting ADA standards, installing advanced Midwest Guardrail systems, beyond gore paving, and implementing new bridge barriers. The SHOPP project, covering the stretch from Interstate 5 to about one mile east of Interstate 15, aims to improve roadway safety and operational efficiency. Construction is set to commence in April 2025 and is expected to be completed by December 2026.

Valued at USD 102 million (approximately SEK 1.1 billion), the project will be recorded in the US order bookings for the first quarter of 2025. Skanska’s responsibilities under this agreement include the construction of an acceleration lane on the eastbound side of Route 78 and the rehabilitation of the surface structural section across more than 40 lane-miles of roadway. In addition, the project entails the installation of new curb ramps that comply with ADA standards, the placement of upgraded Midwest Guardrail systems, beyond gore paving, and the implementation of new bridge barriers.

The comprehensive State Route 78 SHOPP project targets a roadway segment stretching from Interstate 5 to roughly one mile east of Interstate 15. Collectively, these improvements are designed to elevate roadway safety and operational standards. Construction work is slated to begin in April 2025, with completion anticipated by December 2026.
