Nokia powers major upgrade of KPN’s national core network as FabriQ becomes the foundation for the Netherlands’ digital future

Nokia powers major upgrade of KPN’s national core network as FabriQ becomes the foundation for the Netherlands’ digital future

(IN BRIEF) Nokia has been selected by KPN to rebuild the Netherlands’ core digital infrastructure through an 800G-capable IP and optical network that forms the heart of KPN’s FabriQ architecture. The upgrade increases network capacity from 48 Tbps to more than 216 Tbps, adds long-term resilience, and supports customer speeds above 10 Gbps. Using Nokia’s FP5 IP routers and PSE-6 optical systems, the project marks Europe’s first major brownfield deployment of segment routing over IPv6 (SRv6), enabling greater automation, flexible traffic engineering, and cloud-ready services. KPN says the FabriQ network will serve millions of Dutch users across sectors including manufacturing, commercial real estate, and smart buildings. Nokia highlights that the effort strengthens their partnership while delivering one of Europe’s most advanced energy-efficient core networks. The platform will connect any access type to any cloud or service with built-in encryption, failover, and support for a broad range of IP and optical functions.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 3-Dec-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Nokia has been chosen by KPN to modernize and expand the Netherlands’ national digital backbone through the rollout of a next-generation IP and optical network capable of supporting 800G transmission speeds. The large-scale transformation, central to KPN’s FabriQ program, will serve as the country’s core infrastructure layer—the “digital aorta” through which all fixed, mobile, enterprise, and wholesale services flow to millions of users. The initiative is designed to dramatically increase network capacity, strengthen resilience, reduce energy usage, and provide the flexibility required to support future cloud-based and automated services.

As the leading telecommunications provider in the Netherlands, KPN continues to expand fiber coverage nationwide to ensure high-speed broadband access for consumers and businesses. The FabriQ upgrade is a strategic step in that roadmap. By deploying Nokia’s FP5-powered IP routers and PSE-6 optical systems, KPN will boost its overall network throughput from 48 Tbps to more than 216 Tbps and deliver customer services surpassing 10 Gbps. The modernized architecture will also bolster the operator’s security and automation capabilities, replacing legacy infrastructure with a more scalable and efficient transport network built for the next decade of digital growth.

A notable milestone of the program is its status as Europe’s first large-scale brownfield deployment of segment routing over IPv6 (SRv6). This technology separates routing logic from the underlying physical network, enabling greater automation, improved traffic management, faster fault resolution, and more dynamic service delivery—capabilities increasingly required as cloud workloads expand and enterprise digitalization accelerates.

Erik Brands, Executive Vice-President of Network at KPN, emphasized the foundational role FabriQ will play across the Dutch digital landscape. He highlighted that the new platform will support organizations across manufacturing, commercial real estate, smart buildings and more, ensuring they have the secure, high-capacity connectivity required to thrive. Brands noted that Nokia’s portfolio gives KPN the scale, automation, and security needed to deliver reliable services today while preparing for future demands.

Matthieu Bourguignon, Nokia’s Senior Vice-President of Network Infrastructure for Europe, said the partnership builds on the companies’ longstanding collaboration. He described the project as a major leap forward, combining 800G-ready optical transport with SRv6 programmability to create one of Europe’s most advanced core and transport networks. Bourguignon also pointed to energy efficiency and long-term resilience as key strategic benefits for KPN.

The upgraded FabriQ network is designed to seamlessly connect any access type—fixed, mobile, or enterprise—to any service or cloud environment. It will support a broad portfolio of capabilities including IP core and peering, metro transport, optical services, monitoring, lawful intercept, and service-edge applications. With advanced encryption and built-in failover, the network will provide businesses and wholesale customers across the Netherlands with enhanced performance, reliability, and security.
