Safran Elevates Rafale Capabilities with New M88 T-REX Engine Delivering 20% More Thrust

Safran Elevates Rafale Capabilities with New M88 T-REX Engine Delivering 20% More Thrust

(IN BRIEF) Safran Aircraft Engines has introduced the M88 T-REX at the Paris Air Show—an advanced upgrade to the M88 powerplant that raises afterburning thrust to nine metric tons, a 20 percent increase. The enhancements comprise a higher-capacity low-pressure compressor, a new high-pressure turbine with state-of-the-art materials and cooling, and an optimized nozzle design. Retaining the original M88’s compact footprint, modular architecture and efficiency, the T-REX variant ensures parts commonality for easier maintenance. Christophe Bruneau, EVP Military Engines, emphasized the engine’s role in expanding Safran’s technology suite and bolstering national aerospace sovereignty. Risk-reduction studies are underway, with qualification aligned to the Rafale F5 rollout.

(PRESS RELEASE) LE BOURGET, 17-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — At the 54th Paris Air Show, Safran Aircraft Engines is presenting the M88 T-REX, an upgraded variant of its acclaimed M88 propulsion system tailored for future Rafale F5 standards. Building on the M88’s compact design and proven reliability, the T-REX version boosts maximum afterburning thrust to nine metric tons—20 percent above the current model.

Key enhancements include a redesigned low-pressure compressor for increased airflow, a high-pressure turbine forged from advanced alloys with improved cooling circuits, and an aerodynamically optimized variable nozzle. Despite these performance gains, the M88 T-REX maintains the M88’s hallmark attributes—modularity, fuel efficiency and competitive lifecycle costs—while ensuring full parts-compatibility for streamlined maintenance and fleet interoperability.

“We’re excited to unveil the M88 T-REX, which extends the envelope of our flagship engine to satisfy tomorrow’s defense requirements amid a shifting geopolitical landscape,” said Christophe Bruneau, Executive Vice President, Military Engines at Safran. “This project not only elevates Rafale performance but also enriches our technology base, reinforcing sovereign aerospace capabilities.”

Safran has initiated risk-reduction studies and will sync the M88 T-REX qualification timeline with the Rafale F5’s entry into service, ensuring a seamless integration for Dassault Aviation’s next-generation fighter standard.
