Safran Reosc’s SEEING 130 Wide Achieves In-Orbit Qualification on NorSat-4 Satellite

(IN BRIEF) Safran Reosc’s SEEING 130 Wide imager, selected by the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment for the NorSat-4 satellite, has validated its low-light, wide-field performance in orbit. This first in-space flight for Safran Reosc provides heritage for the entire SEEING optics family, which spans wide-swath medium-resolution to sub-meter high-resolution Earth-observation systems and space-object-tracking instruments. The compact design delivers exceptional sensitivity and image quality, enabling environmental, maritime and meteorological applications. Jean-Marie Bétermier, Head of Space at Safran, hailed the success as proof of Safran Reosc’s leadership in supplying precision optics for New Space initiatives.

(PRESS RELEASE) PARIS, 17-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Safran Reosc, the high-performance optics arm of Safran Electronics & Defense, has reached a key milestone with its SEEING 130 Wide space imager. Chosen as the Low Light Imager for the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment’s NorSat-4 satellite, SEEING 130 Wide has now proven its capability in orbit—validating image quality under low-light conditions and paving the way for follow-on missions. Safran Reosc is already collaborating with FFI on early designs for future satellite payloads.

As Safran Reosc’s first space-flown instrument, SEEING 130 Wide establishes critical heritage for the wider SEEING family. Its compact design combines a broad field of view with excellent resolution and sensitivity, supporting applications like environmental monitoring, maritime traffic surveillance and weather forecasting. This achievement underscores Safran Reosc’s expertise in precision optics and strengthens its role as a preferred supplier for LEO Earth-Observation and Space Situational Awareness systems.

Jean-Marie Bétermier, Head of the Space Global Business Unit at Safran Electronics & Defense, commented, “Demonstrating SEEING 130 Wide in orbit is a landmark success for Safran Reosc. It highlights our ability to deliver high-value space optics tailored to the demands of New Space missions.” The in-orbit qualification of SEEING 130 Wide ranks among the year’s most significant accomplishments for Safran Reosc and confirms its readiness to support the next generation of space programs.
