Rolls-Royce to Deliver Major Battery Storage System for Dutch Energy Project

(IN BRIEF) Rolls-Royce Power Systems has been awarded a contract by Battery Park Zeewolde (BPZ) to supply a large-scale battery storage system in Zeewolde, Netherlands. The system, featuring a capacity of 32.6 MW and 65.2 MWh, will support energy trading and grid stability near a wind farm substation. Scheduled for operation by summer 2025, the project involves local community participation and highlights Rolls-Royce’s commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions.

(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 16-Jul-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Rolls-Royce has secured a significant contract from Battery Park Zeewolde (BPZ) to supply a state-of-the-art battery storage system with a capacity of 32.6 Megawatts and 65.2 Megawatt hours. The project, powered by Rolls-Royce’s mtu EnergyPack QG system, is slated to commence operations by summer 2025, supported by a comprehensive ten-year maintenance agreement.

Situated adjacent to the Zeewolde wind farm substation, the battery park aims to enhance energy trading capabilities and grid stability in the Dutch electricity market. During periods of high wind energy production, excess electricity will be stored, preventing grid overload. Conversely, stored energy will be supplied during calm periods, ensuring a consistent and reliable energy supply.

“This battery storage solution marks a crucial step towards smarter energy use and grid stability,” remarked Sjoerd Sieburgh, Director of Windpark Zeewolde. “Rolls-Royce Power Systems has proven to be a reliable partner in our efforts to bolster energy security.”

The BPZ battery storage park, covering approximately 2000 square meters upon completion, will rank among the largest in the Netherlands, capable of annually storing energy equivalent to the consumption of about 12,000 households. This initiative underscores the region’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and supports the broader transition towards renewable energy sources.

Andreas Görtz, President Sustainable Power Solutions at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, highlighted the pivotal role of battery energy storage systems in advancing the energy transition worldwide. He emphasized their strategic importance in enhancing energy security and sustainability.”

Involving local stakeholders, including over 200 farmers, residents, and entrepreneurs through wind farm co-ownership, the project exemplifies community engagement in sustainable energy initiatives. Rolls-Royce is collaborating with Equans for electrical works and Van Boekel for civil engineering, underscoring a multifaceted approach to project delivery.
