Rolls-Royce Submarines Appoints AtkinsRéalis and Mott MacDonald for Key Fissile Design Role in Raynesway Site Expansion

(IN BRIEF) Rolls-Royce Submarines has appointed AtkinsRéalis and Mott MacDonald as its new fissile design partners for the ongoing expansion of its Raynesway site in Derby. This marks a key milestone in the company’s plan to double the size of the site, driven by increased demand from the Royal Navy and the AUKUS agreement. The expansion will create 1,170 skilled roles and include the construction of new manufacturing and office facilities. AtkinsRéalis and Mott MacDonald will design these specialized nuclear facilities, with the construction partner to be selected soon. Rolls-Royce Submarines will continue to support the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet, including the Dreadnought and SSN-AUKUS programs.

(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 14-Jan-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Rolls-Royce Submarines has revealed that it has appointed AtkinsRéalis and Mott MacDonald as its new design partners for fissile facilities in the ongoing expansion of its Raynesway site. Both companies, widely recognized for their expertise in engineering and development, will collaborate to design essential facilities that meet the complex demands of nuclear work within the expanding site.

The announcement follows a plan outlined in June 2023, where Rolls-Royce confirmed intentions to significantly expand its Submarines site in Derby to accommodate the growing needs of the Royal Navy and the recent AUKUS agreement. This development will see the creation of new manufacturing and office spaces, with an estimated 1,170 new skilled roles in various fields, including engineering and manufacturing.

As work progresses within the nuclear-licensed Raynesway site, the design and construction of fissile facilities require additional precision and rigor compared to traditional construction projects. In the joint venture named PROPEL, AtkinsRéalis and Mott MacDonald will not only design these new facilities but will also partner with the selected construction firm to oversee their implementation.

Terry Meighan, Infrastructure Director at Rolls-Royce Submarines, emphasized the significance of this expansion: “The expansion is crucial for national defense, enabling us to ramp up production and deliver the Dreadnought and SSN-AUKUS attack submarines at a faster pace. With the combined experience of AtkinsRéalis and Mott MacDonald in nuclear design, we are confident that the new facilities will be in capable hands.”

AtkinsRéalis’ Head of Major Projects – Nuclear, Andy Smart, remarked, “The new facilities are vital to the safe, swift, and efficient delivery of new submarines. Our expertise in nuclear fuel management and defense infrastructure will support Rolls-Royce Submarines in achieving success with this critical project.”

Jeremy Reed, Global Practice Leader – Nuclear at Mott MacDonald, added, “With over 60 years of experience in complex and highly regulated nuclear environments, Mott MacDonald is proud to contribute to the expansion of Rolls-Royce Submarines’ Derby site, further reinforcing our commitment to supporting the UK submarine industry.”

The next step in this expansion is selecting the fissile construction partner who will work with AtkinsRéalis and Mott MacDonald to bring their designs to life, with the contractor set to be announced soon. Rolls-Royce Submarines, which currently employs over 5,000 people, will continue to deliver reactor plant support for the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet, including the Astute and Dreadnought programs.
