Nokia partners with Extreme Broadband and Open DC to modernize Malaysia’s AI data centers with secure and scalable networks

(IN BRIEF) Nokia has partnered with Extreme Broadband (EBB) and its subsidiary Open DC to upgrade six AI data centers in Malaysia using its Data Center Gateway, Data Center Fabric, and quantum-safe networking technologies. The deployment will enhance network performance, security, and energy efficiency while supporting Malaysia’s National Cloud Computing Policy. Both companies also signed an MoU to collaborate on enterprise connectivity services, including multi-cloud solutions and DDoS protection. Open DC’s Wong Weng Yew said the project will create strategic connectivity hubs that fuel AI innovation, while Nokia’s Kent Wong emphasized its role in scaling Malaysia’s data center industry with proven, energy-efficient IP solutions.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 2-Sep-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Nokia has signed a contract with Extreme Broadband (EBB) and its subsidiary Open DC to modernize Open DC’s artificial intelligence (AI) data centers across Malaysia, introducing advanced networking solutions that enhance security, performance, and efficiency. The partnership supports the goals of Malaysia’s National Cloud Computing Policy while meeting the demanding requirements of enterprise clients, including those in the banking and finance sector.

The deployment will connect six AI data centers — Cyberjaya, Johor Bahru, Penang, and the soon-to-launch Kedah facility — through Nokia’s Data Center Gateway, Data Center Fabric, and quantum-safe networking technologies. The solution also incorporates Nokia’s 7250 Interconnect Router and 7220 Interconnect Router, designed for energy efficiency and scalability. Together, these technologies will enable Open DC to deliver a more reliable and secure infrastructure while aligning with its mission of developing strategic connectivity hubs across Malaysia.

In addition to the deployment, Nokia and EBB have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate further on data center connectivity, quantum-safe networks, multi-cloud services, and DDoS protection and mitigation. The companies plan to co-develop a go-to-market strategy, combining technical expertise and infrastructure capabilities to support enterprise growth and Malaysia’s digital economy.

Wong Weng Yew, Managing Director at Open DC, said: “This collaboration underscores our commitment to pioneering technologies that deliver exceptional value to our customers and contribute to Malaysia’s economic growth under the MYDIGITAL policy. Nokia’s solutions will enhance our security, scalability, and sustainability, enabling us to build connectivity hubs that support AI-driven innovation and create new revenue opportunities for enterprises.”

Kent Wong, Vice President and Head of IP Networks for Asia Pacific at Nokia, added: “Our IP and data center solutions are field-proven worldwide, empowering operators to meet the demand for secure, scalable, high-performance networks. This agreement with Extreme Broadband strengthens our role in Malaysia’s fast-growing data center sector, helping Open DC deliver a new level of resilience, automation, and energy efficiency for its customers.”

By combining Nokia’s networking expertise with EBB and Open DC’s established presence in Malaysia, the partnership positions all three companies as central players in building the next generation of digital infrastructure that underpins Malaysia’s future economy.
