Nokia Expands Collaboration with SoftBank to Power Japan’s Next-Generation 4G and 5G Networks

(IN BRIEF) Nokia has been selected by SoftBank Corp. to modernize and expand its 4G and 5G networks across Western Japan. The new agreement includes Nokia’s latest AirScale RAN solutions, Habrok Massive MIMO radios, and ReefShark-powered baseband equipment, coupled with the AI-powered MantaRay platform for enhanced network automation. The collaboration builds on a long-term partnership between the two companies and extends into joint R&D on AI-RAN and 6G technologies through the AI-RAN Alliance. Executives from both firms emphasized the partnership’s focus on performance, efficiency, and sustainability as they prepare for Advanced-5G and 6G deployments.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 5-Nov-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — Nokia has announced an expanded collaboration with SoftBank Corp. to modernize and extend the operator’s 4G and 5G networks across Western Japan, marking another milestone in their long-standing partnership. The agreement will see Nokia supply advanced AirScale Radio Access Network (RAN) solutions, powered by its ReefShark System-on-Chip technology, and integrate AI-driven tools to enhance performance, energy efficiency, and network automation.

As part of the new deal, Nokia will deploy its energy-efficient AirScale portfolio, including the latest Habrok Massive MIMO radios and AirScale baseband equipment. These state-of-the-art technologies will increase network capacity and coverage while reducing power consumption, aligning with both companies’ sustainability goals. Nokia’s AI-powered MantaRay solution will also be implemented to support advanced Self-Organizing Network (SON) capabilities, enabling real-time optimization and intelligent network management.

Mark Atkinson, Head of Radio Access Networks at Nokia, emphasized the importance of the collaboration:

“This expanded collaboration with SoftBank demonstrates the strength of our long-standing partnership. Our solutions are infused with AI capabilities and provide unparalleled performance with industry-leading energy efficiency, supporting the evolution toward Advanced-5G networks.”

SoftBank’s Executive Vice President and CTO, Hideyuki Tsukuda, added:

“This enhanced partnership with Nokia helps us build a unique and high-quality 5G network powered by AI. The upgraded network will improve efficiency, reduce emissions, and deliver a superior user experience to our customers.”

Beyond this deployment, Nokia and SoftBank are deepening their cooperation in research and development through the AI-RAN Alliance, of which both are founding members. Their joint efforts include R&D projects in AI-RAN and 6G technologies, field trials, and the development of a virtualized RAN platform. The companies are also conducting 6G testing in Tokyo using Massive MIMO technology in the 7 GHz frequency band, further advancing Japan’s leadership in next-generation wireless innovation.

This modernization program reinforces SoftBank’s commitment to delivering world-class mobile connectivity and positions Nokia as a key partner in Japan’s journey toward Advanced-5G and future 6G networks.
