Metso Supports Viscaria’s Copper Mine Reopening With Pre-Engineered Mills

(IN BRIEF) Metso has received an approximately €16 million order to supply two horizontal grinding mills for the reopening of Gruvaktiebolaget Viscaria’s copper mine in Kiruna, northern Sweden. The equipment will support an annual production target of 26,000 tonnes of copper concentrate, helping Viscaria become Sweden’s second-largest copper producer. Supplied from Metso’s Select™ range, the pre-engineered SAG and ball mills are designed to enable faster delivery, reduced project costs and efficient execution, making them well suited to mine restart projects and demanding mining conditions.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 14-Jan-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Metso has secured an order from Gruvaktiebolaget Viscaria to supply two horizontal grinding mills for the restart of the Viscaria copper mine in Kiruna, northern Sweden. The contract, valued at approximately €16 million, will be recorded in Metso’s Minerals segment order intake for the first quarter of 2026 and represents a key milestone in the mine’s return to production.

The Viscaria mine is being repositioned as a significant contributor to Sweden’s domestic copper supply. With an expected annual output of around 26,000 tonnes of copper concentrate, the operation is targeting the position of Sweden’s second-largest copper producer, supporting both national and wider European demand for critical raw materials.

Metso’s delivery includes Select™ SAG and ball mills from its Metso Plus portfolio. These pre-engineered grinding solutions are designed to simplify equipment selection and procurement through standardized configurations, making them particularly suitable for projects focused on efficiency and rapid execution. According to the company’s press release, the Select mill concept enables shorter delivery timelines, lower project costs and smoother implementation, which are critical factors in mine restart scenarios.

The grinding mills are engineered using conservative design parameters and durable components to ensure reliable performance in demanding operating environments. This design approach supports high efficiency, strong availability and long-term operational stability, while helping to maximize throughput and productivity at the Viscaria site.

With more than 8,000 grinding mill installations worldwide, Metso is an established supplier of copper processing and comminution technologies, including some of the world’s largest SAG, AG and ball mills. The Viscaria project further strengthens Metso’s position as a key partner for mining companies seeking standardized, high-performance solutions for modern and sustainable operations.
