Leonardo provides advanced communications network for the G7 summit in Taormina

ROME, 10-Apr-2017 — /EuropaWire/ — Leonardo has provided an advanced communications network for the G7 summit in Taormina, allowing for the effective coordination of security operations. Security forces protecting the international summit, which will see heads of state and other government officials convene in the town of Taormina, Sicily on May 26-27, will be able to use the equipment to rapidly intervene during any crisis, ensuring the summit, the local population and the surrounding area receive the highest level of protection.

The Leonardo network, which was delivered within an extremely tight timescale, is based on TETRA (TErrestrial Trunked RAdio) technology, the international gold standard for mission-critical communications. It covers the towns of Taormina, Catania and Messina, Airports in Sigonella (Siracusa) and Fontanarossa (Catania) and all summit locations.

Police forces will be able to rely on the system for encrypted digital communications and extensive radio coverage throughout the area, including over coastal water and airspace. Around 2,000 latest-generation radio terminals have been provided and multimedia operator workstations have been installed in the inter-force control room, allowing for integrated information management and the coordination of local resources. In the G7 operations room, security forces will be able to view images captured by a large-scale surveillance system, installed and operated by Leonardo, that spans Sicily. This network comprises around 1,000 sensors, including cameras and automatic licence plate readers. At the summit, the company has also invested to provide a sophisticated mobile operations room that uses a TETRA communications network integrated with dedicated LTE broadband technology to transmit video on-the-move.

Leonardo’s solutions, designed and built to fulfil the objectives and requirements laid down by G7 organisers, are critical to the safety of the summit. The company demonstrated an open and flexible approach in extending its offer to cover video surveillance equipment specifically tailored to the event, aiming to maximise the effectiveness of activities already carried out, as reported recently by the Italian press.
