Kuehne+Nagel Invests in Sustainable Air Cargo Infrastructure to Boost Connectivity and Efficiency at Frankfurt Airport

(IN BRIEF) Kuehne+Nagel has signed a lease agreement with Fraport AG for a new 7,600 square metre air cargo facility in CargoCity South at Frankfurt Airport, marking a strategic investment to strengthen its global air logistics network and support growing trade volumes. The facility, scheduled for completion by the end of 2028, will provide secure airside access, faster cargo handling, and improved operational efficiency through its 16 gates and truck docks. Designed with sustainability at its core, the building has received DGNB gold certification and will feature energy-efficient technologies and a large photovoltaic system. The development will expand Kuehne+Nagel’s footprint in CargoCity South to over 20,000 square metres, reinforcing Frankfurt’s role as a key hub in its global air logistics operations, particularly for fast-growing industries such as healthcare, semiconductors, and high technology.

(PRESS RELEASE) SCHINDELLEGI, 4-Feb-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Kuehne+Nagel has entered into a long-term lease agreement with Fraport AG for a newly developed air cargo facility spanning 7,600 square metres in CargoCity South at Frankfurt Airport. The investment represents a strategic step in strengthening the company’s global air logistics infrastructure, enhancing connectivity across major trade routes, and supporting growing customer demand. The facility is scheduled for completion and handover by the end of 2028.

Located within the secure airside zone of Frankfurt Airport – one of the world’s most important cargo hubs – the new building will provide direct access to aircraft handling areas. This proximity is expected to streamline cargo flows between warehouses and aircraft, improve operational efficiency, reduce turnaround times, and enable smoother integration with Kuehne+Nagel’s broader logistics network.

The design of the facility includes 16 gates and truck docks, allowing for scalable and flexible operations that can adapt to fluctuating market needs. The layout is intended to support faster processing, greater handling capacity, and improved coordination across different logistics activities.

Sustainability has been a central consideration in the facility’s development. The building has received the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) gold certification, reflecting its compliance with stringent environmental standards. Energy-efficient features such as LED lighting, heat pump systems, electric vehicle charging stations, and smart energy management technology will be installed. Additionally, a large photovoltaic array on the roof will generate renewable electricity, contributing to the airport’s overall energy supply.

With the addition of this new facility, Kuehne+Nagel’s total operational footprint in CargoCity South will exceed 20,000 square metres, reinforcing its long-term commitment to Frankfurt Airport as a critical global air freight gateway.

Martin Schaefer, Senior Vice President Air Logistics Germany at Kuehne+Nagel, highlighted the strategic importance of Frankfurt within the company’s air logistics network. He noted that as supply chains become increasingly complex and dynamic, the new facility will provide the necessary infrastructure, capacity, and connectivity to support growth, particularly in fast-expanding sectors such as healthcare, semiconductors, high technology, and cloud infrastructure.
