GTT Receives Approvals in Principle for Ethane-Optimised Containment Systems Mark III Slim™ and NO96 Slim™ from Bureau Veritas

(IN BRIEF) GTT has secured two Approvals in Principle from Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore for its Mark III Slim™ and NO96 Slim™ ethane-optimised cargo containment systems. These new systems are tailored to meet the needs of Very Large Ethane Carriers (VLEC) and Ultra Large Ethane Carriers (ULEC), offering shipowners enhanced cargo capacity and reduced construction costs. The systems also cater to other liquefied petrochemical cargoes such as LPG, ethylene, butane, propane, and propylene. The approvals confirm compliance with the IGC Code and underline GTT’s commitment to innovation and safety in liquefied gas containment.

(PRESS RELEASE) PARIS, 5-Jun-2025 — /EuropaWire/ — GTT has been granted two Approvals in Principle (AiP) from Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) for its innovative ethane-optimised cargo containment systems: Mark III Slim™ and NO96 Slim™. These systems are developed by GTT based on its proven Mark III and NO96 membrane technologies, specifically designed to meet the requirements of transporting petrochemical cargoes. By optimizing these technologies, GTT enables shipowners to maximize cargo capacity and optimize construction costs for Very Large Ethane Carriers (VLEC) and Ultra Large Ethane Carriers (ULEC).

Beyond ethane, these advanced containment systems are also suitable for the transportation of LPG, ethylene, butane, propane, and propylene. This provides shipyards and shipowners with a high-performance and versatile solution in response to the growing demand for dedicated ethane carriers.

The Approvals in Principle granted by BV confirm the key advantages of the Mark III Slim™ and NO96 Slim™ systems, such as:

  • Increased tank capacity: The systems increase usable tank volume by over 1,000 m³ for an equivalent ship size by reducing insulation thickness by 70 mm.
  • Cost reductions and faster construction: Simplified anchoring systems, lighter panels and caissons, and the introduction of new steel alloys streamline fabrication and reduce shipyard time.

After a thorough review of the documentation submitted by GTT, BV confirmed that both systems comply with the applicable requirements of the IGC Code.

Philippe Berterottière, Chairman and CEO of GTT, commented, “We are pleased to secure these Approvals in Principle from Bureau Veritas, which reflect our continued commitment to innovation and safety in liquefied gas containment. GTT combines decades of expertise to provide versatile, high-capacity solutions that directly address the evolving needs of the growing ethane market.”

Matthieu de Tugny, President of Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore, added, “At BV, we are focused on advancing innovation and safety in liquefied gas transport. Our collaboration with GTT in developing the Mark III Slim™ and NO96 Slim™ systems enables us to support membrane technologies that extend beyond LNG, helping shipowners achieve improved efficiency and compliance with rigorous industry standards.”
