(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON,3-Aug-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Associated British Ports (ABP), the UK’s leading ports group, is excited to announce its sponsorship of two significant events in Plymouth this summer: the British Firework Championships and the World Cadet Championships.

The British Firework Championships, set for August 14-15, will feature dazzling displays as top firework companies compete for the championship title. ABP’s partnership with this event, now in its 27th year, highlights its commitment to community engagement. This year’s event supports the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) on its 200th anniversary.

ABP is also the headline sponsor for the World Cadet Championships, running until August 9. Hosted by Plymouth Youth Sailing and Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre, this international sailing competition will see over 200 young sailors vying for the World Cadet champion title. The event will feature intense races against the picturesque backdrop of Plymouth Hoe and the Barbican and include activities like beach cleanups and visits to the National Marine Aquarium.

Both events underscore Plymouth’s status as a premier sailing destination, boost tourism, and celebrate the city’s maritime heritage.

Ashley Curnow, Divisional Port Manager for Wales and the Southwest, stated, “ABP is thrilled to support events like the British Firework Championships and the World Cadet Championships, which showcase the city’s vibrant culture and attract visitors from around the globe.”

As part of its commitment to Plymouth, ABP is enhancing Millbay Docks with strategic infrastructure developments. These improvements will boost the port’s capacity for handling cargo and support a new Passenger Boarding Bridge for the ferry and cruise market. Millbay Docks contribute over £93 million to the UK economy and handle around 80,000 tonnes of cargo annually. The £1.3 million in Freeport seed capital funding for these developments will further ABP’s and Plymouth’s goals of increasing global trade.
