National Grid to begin the latest phase of its work to replace gas mains in Nine Elms Lane, Wandsworth

  • Victorian gas mains being replaced with ultra-tough new pipes
  • Work is part of a £40million scheme to replace gas mains in London
  • Minimal dig technology being used to minimise disruption

LONDON, 11-8-2014 — /EuropaWire/ — National Grid is poised to begin the latest phase of its work to replace gas mains in Nine Elms Lane, Wandsworth.

After a brief hiatus in the project to avoid disruption to the Prudential Cycle Ride, National Grid will resume its vital work on Monday 11 August.

Temporary bus lane closures will be implemented as National Grid replaces a stretch of medium pressure gas mains along Nine Elms Lane in the vicinity of Elm Quay and Riverside Court.

Neil Jackson, National Grid Project Engineer, said: “The Victorian gas mains we’re replacing have served the area well for many years.

“However we’re replacing them now to help make sure the local community keep on enjoying the safe and reliable gas supplies which contribute to London’s continued status as a leading 21st century city.”

This latest phase of work is expected to take around five works to complete, with further gas mains replacement due to take place along Nine Elms Lane and Battersea Park Lane until the end of November 2014.

National Grid is currently investing £40million to replace ageing metallic gas mains with new pipes made of polyethylene, an ultra-tough material. This work is taking place across London with work scheduled to take place in Wandsworth until August 2015.

The latest and most efficient technology is being used to deliver the work to minimise disruption and noise levels. New pipes are being inserted into the old ones wherever possible. This dramatically reduces the need for digging and minimises any disruption to road users and residents.

The work should not result in any interruptions to the local gas supply and the National Grid team shouldn’t require access to any properties in the area.

The local community and surrounding businesses will be kept informed about the progress of the project.
