Wind Power Milestone: Iberdrola and Masdar Complete Baltic Eagle Turbine Installation to Power 475,000 Homes

Baltic Eagle is the second of Iberdrola’s three major wind farm projects in Germany, along with Wikinger and Windanker.

(IN BRIEF) Iberdrola and Masdar have completed the installation of all 50 wind turbines at the Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea. The 476 MW wind farm is set to provide clean energy to around 475,000 households, reducing carbon emissions by 800,000 tons annually. This project, part of Iberdrola’s Baltic Hub, is a collaboration between the two companies and contributes significantly to Europe’s green energy goals. The project also marks Masdar’s first venture with Iberdrola in Germany. Both companies are committed to expanding offshore wind and renewable energy as part of global efforts to combat climate change. The Baltic Hub is expected to have a total capacity of over 1.1 GW by 2026.

(PRESS RELEASE) BILBAO, 16-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Iberdrola and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) have successfully completed the installation of all 50 wind turbines at the 476 MW Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm, located in the German Baltic Sea. This major milestone marks a key step in the joint venture’s contribution to Europe’s clean energy future. The turbines, each with a capacity of 9.53 MW, were supplied by Vestas and installed by Fred Olsen Windcarrier.

Once fully operational, Baltic Eagle will provide renewable energy to approximately 475,000 households, reducing carbon emissions by an estimated 800,000 tons annually. This project is the second of three major wind farms Iberdrola is developing in Germany, alongside the operational Wikinger wind farm (350 MW) and the Windanker wind farm (315 MW) currently in planning. Together, these projects form Iberdrola’s Baltic Hub, a strategic initiative to enhance Germany’s energy transition.

This project also represents Masdar’s first venture with Iberdrola in Germany and its largest euro-denominated financing to date. “The completion of turbine installation at Baltic Eagle is a significant milestone in what has been a record year for Iberdrola’s offshore wind developments. With this project, we are on track to reach 5,000 MW of offshore capacity globally by 2026,” said Ignacio Galán, Iberdrola’s Executive Chairman.

HE Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Chairman of Masdar, and COP28 President, commented: “The installation of the final turbine at Baltic Eagle is a remarkable achievement. This project reinforces our partnership with Iberdrola and highlights our shared commitment to driving the global energy transition through offshore wind. This collaboration aligns with the ambitious targets set at COP28 to triple global renewable energy capacity by 2030.”

Masdar’s Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, added: “Baltic Eagle marks a significant milestone in our partnership with Iberdrola and is a vital component in our shared goal of delivering clean energy at scale. Offshore wind plays a crucial role in the energy transition, and we look forward to continued collaboration with Iberdrola to bring more transformative projects to fruition, both in Europe and globally.”

By 2026, Iberdrola’s Baltic Hub will have a total offshore capacity of over 1.1 GW, with an investment of around €3.7 billion. Baltic Eagle is a cornerstone of Iberdrola’s broader strategy to work with key players in the German market, providing sustainable energy solutions that help meet the country’s climate objectives.

In July 2023, Iberdrola and Masdar formalized their collaboration on Baltic Eagle. During COP28, the companies announced an additional €15 billion agreement to explore joint development of offshore wind and green hydrogen projects in Germany, the UK, and the US. Masdar aims to achieve a renewable energy portfolio capacity of 100 GW by 2030, supporting global efforts to triple renewables capacity by the end of the decade.
