(IN BRIEF) The iTEC Alliance, consisting of eight major air navigation service providers across Europe and Canada, has launched the build phase of the iTEC SkyNex Air Traffic Control system. This new system aims to enhance efficiency, interoperability, and sustainability in air traffic management by integrating advanced technology and modern open system architecture. Once fully implemented, iTEC SkyNex will manage 12 million flights annually across 26 million square kilometers of airspace, contributing to the creation of the Digital European Sky.

(PRESS RELEASE) MADRID, 3-Sep-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — The iTEC Alliance, a coalition of eight leading air navigation service providers across Europe and Canada, has officially launched the build phase of the iTEC SkyNex Air Traffic Control (ATC) system. This significant milestone follows two years of intensive preparation and collaboration, marking a key step towards a unified, more efficient, and sustainable air traffic management system.

The iTEC SkyNex system aims to revolutionize air traffic control by increasing efficiency, improving interoperability, and reducing both delays and CO2 emissions. By integrating trajectory-based operations and a modern open system architecture, iTEC SkyNex will not only optimize flight routes and resource management but also significantly lower operational costs for air navigation service providers.

The project is a collective effort among iTEC Alliance members, which include DFS (Germany), ENAIRE (Spain), NATS (UK), LVNL (Netherlands), AVINOR (Norway), Oro Navigacija (Lithuania), PANSA (Poland), and NAV CANADA (Canada). Once fully implemented across 27 control centres, iTEC SkyNex will oversee the management of 12 million flights annually, covering 26 million square kilometers of controlled airspace.

The initiative also contributes to the creation of the Digital European Sky, building on existing SESAR and CEF-funded projects like iSNAP and DEVICE. Marcel Bakker, Director of iTEC, emphasized the importance of this phase, noting that it highlights the alliance’s commitment to innovation and efficiency in air traffic management.

The iTEC SkyNex system is poised to set new standards in air traffic control, paving the way for a more interconnected and environmentally responsible future in aviation.
