In an effort to minimize environmental impact and align with the Antarctic Treaty and Madrid Protocol, the Spanish Army, entrusted with managing the Gabriel de Castilla Base, has prioritized sustainability throughout its operations. For four months, the 13 army personnel stationed at the Gabriel de Castilla Base rely on renewable fuels to meet their energy needs, from electricity to heating, even amidst temperatures plummeting to -30ºC on Deception Island, part of the South Shetland Archipelago. This initiative marks a significant step forward in fostering sustainable practices in one of the most pristine and environmentally sensitive regions on Earth.

Renewable fuels, particularly advanced biofuels derived from organic waste, form a cornerstone of Repsol’s ambitious goal to achieve zero net emissions by 2050.
