Repsol Launches Circular Economy Initiative with 176 Collection Points for Used Cooking Oil in Galicia

(IN BRIEF) Repsol has launched a sustainable initiative in collaboration with the Galician regional government, introducing 176 collection points for used cooking oil at its service stations across Galicia, Spain. The collected oil will be converted into 100% renewable fuels as part of Repsol’s circular economy efforts. The initiative encourages responsible waste disposal and recycling while promoting sustainability in the region. Repsol plans to extend the network to 185 collection points and offers discounts to Waylet application users. This program expands Repsol’s commitment to renewable energy solutions and reducing its carbon footprint.

(PRESS RELEASE) MADRID, 12-Dec-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Repsol S.A. (BME: REP), a Spanish multinational energy and petrochemical company, has unveiled an ambitious project in collaboration with the Galician regional government, Xunta de Galicia, aimed at promoting the sustainable management of used cooking oil. This groundbreaking initiative introduces 176 collection points for used cooking oil at Repsol service stations across Galicia, exemplifying the principles of the circular economy by recycling domestic waste into 100% renewable fuels.

The project builds upon a collaboration agreement signed in August between Repsol and Xunta de Galicia. At a recent event, the second vice-president of the Xunta, Ángeles Vázquez, joined Juan Abascal, Executive Managing Director for Industrial Transformation and Circular Economy at Repsol, and Natalia Barreiro, Director of the Repsol Industrial Complex in A Coruña, to launch this innovative endeavor. The event was also attended by Gonzalo Trenor, Territorial Delegate of the Xunta de Galicia in A Coruña, Sagrario Pérez, General Director of Environmental Quality, Sustainability, and Climate Change, Noemí Díaz, Councilor of Environment of the city of A Coruña, and Sofía Vázquez, representative of Mulleres Colleiteiras, a cooperative authorized for the collection and treatment of used cooking oil.

Repsol’s initiative not only facilitates the sustainable management of used cooking oil waste but also champions the circular economy by converting this waste into a valuable raw material for the production of renewable fuels. Notably, one liter of used cooking oil can yield 0.9 liters of renewable fuel.

Consumers in Galicia can easily participate by delivering their used cooking oil to any of the 176 collection points located at Repsol service stations, with plans to extend this service to 185 points in the near future. Furthermore, users of the Waylet application can enjoy a €0.30 per liter discount when delivering used cooking oil in Galicia, redeemable during their next refueling or when purchasing other products at Repsol’s extensive network of over 3,300 service stations throughout Spain.

In a bid to ensure the proper management of collected waste, Repsol has partnered with Mulleres Colleiteiras, a non-profit cooperative based in A Coruña, consisting of women in vulnerable situations. This cooperative is certified under the ISCC EU scheme, guaranteeing the traceability and sustainability of the waste management process.

This initiative marks the second region in Spain where Repsol has introduced such an initiative, following the successful launch in the Autonomous Region of Madrid in April this year. Additionally, Repsol already supplies 100% renewable fuel at its service station in Coirós, A Coruña, and is planning to open another point in Vigo. The company presently operates more than 40 service stations offering 100% renewable fuel across the Iberian Peninsula.

Repsol’s commitment to sustainability and decarbonizing mobility is evident through its comprehensive energy model, encompassing electrification, renewable fuels, and hydrogen. Renewable fuels, known for their zero net emissions, offer a fast, inclusive, and cost-efficient solution for short-term transport decarbonization. They seamlessly integrate with existing fleets and infrastructure, requiring no additional investments. Repsol has been at the forefront of renewable fuel production, utilizing alternative raw materials such as vegetable oils and used cooking oils in its industrial complexes for over two decades. These renewable fuels are now available at all Repsol service stations in Spain, complying with legislation stipulating over 10% biofuels in conventional fuels.

Repsol’s industrial complex in A Coruña has a long-standing history of biofuel production. In October 2021, the facility processed 500 tons of waste, specifically used cooking oil, to produce renewable diesel for the first time. In 2022, the complex utilized more than 195,000 tons of various bio feedstocks for biofuel production. This year, Repsol aims to increase bio feedstock utilization by 30%, totaling 265,000 tons. The recent addition of an infrastructure upgrade in A Coruña enables the continuous reception of lipid waste via tanker trucks, further enhancing its production capacity and sustainability initiatives.

Repsol has forged strategic alliances with prominent companies in the heavy road transport sector in Spain and Portugal, including Sesé, XPO, Serveto, Havi, Joanca, Carreras, Rhenus, and Luis Simoes, serving clients such as Coca Cola, Freixenet, and Seat. The company has also collaborated with entities in the passenger transport sector, airlines like Iberia, Ryanair, and Vueling, and Navantia for maritime transport decarbonization. Repsol’s commitment extends to various institutions and regional governments across Spain, including Madrid, Murcia, Castile-La Mancha, Aragon, and the province of Granada in Andalusia, all aimed at promoting the adoption of renewable fuels in mobility and reducing carbon emissions.

Repsol’s innovative cooking oil recycling project in Galicia signifies a major step toward a sustainable and circular economy, benefiting consumers, the environment, and the broader goal of reducing carbon emissions in the transportation sector.
