ZÜBLIN Embarks on €450 Million Lock Replacement Project Amid Ongoing Shipping Operations

(IN BRIEF) ZÜBLIN, a subsidiary of STRABAG, has secured a contract from the Waterway Construction Office Aschaffenburg to replace the lock Kriegenbrunn. The €450 million project, slated to commence in April 2024 and expected to conclude by spring 2032, will be undertaken while shipping operations continue. The scope includes the construction of a new single-chamber lock, three reservoirs, approach areas with sheet pile walls, and upstream and downstream canals. Despite the complexities posed by excavating a pit over 30 meters deep and nearly 200 meters long, ZÜBLIN aims to ensure uninterrupted shipping operations during the construction period, highlighting their expertise in infrastructure expansion on waterways.

(PRESS RELEASE) STUTTGART, 25-Mar-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — STRABAG subsidiary ZÜBLIN has been commissioned by the Waterway Construction Office Aschaffenburg to replace the lock Kriegenbrunn. Work by the consortium, consisting of Ed. Züblin AG, Züblin Spezialtiefbau GmbH and Bauer Spezialtiefbau GmbH, will start in April 2024 and is scheduled to last until spring 2032.

“This demanding project, which we are carrying out during ongoing operations, is yet another example of our construction expertise. With this project, we are continuing to drive the expansion of modern infrastructure on our waterways,” says Klemens Haselsteiner, CEO of STRABAG SE.

New construction during ongoing operations

The new single-chamber lock is being built using solid construction methods. The work comprises the excavation of the construction pit, construction of the new lock, including three reservoirs to the east of the existing lock, the approach areas with sheet pile walls, and the upstream and downstream canals. In addition to the extensive ground and civil engineering services, the overall contract also includes the steel hydraulics works and the operating technology.

The excavation of the construction pit is a key element of the project. The new lock will be built in the immediate vicinity of the existing facility without interrupting shipping operations. This makes it essential that the old lock is not affected in any way by the construction works. With an excavation pit over 30 m deep and nearly 200 m long lying over half in groundwater, this is a particular challenge. A replacement for the old Kriegenbrunn lock south of Erlangen became necessary, as the damage to the old lock was so extensive that repairs or renovation works were no longer enough.
